This is a tough job unless you have the tools needed to hold cams and crank in place because if they move even a fraction out of place the pistons will interfere with the valves in the head

SOURCE: timing belt 1994 nissan altima

My 1994 Altima has a timing chain on it and these are supposed to last the life of the engine. I would say unless you can really hear the problem then to leave it alone.

That's a load of **** they are feeding you.The timing chain tentioner has a fault and not tentioning the chian.I think you have done a good thing keeping it on synthetic oil. That causes less wear on moving parts than other oils.

2006 nissan altima 2.5 balance shaft assembly timing

Before I replaced the balance shaft assembly chain on my 2004, the marks on the chain weren't lined up with the marks on the sprocket. When I installed the new chain, I just lined up the marks. (Had to rotate balance shaft independent of crankshaft to do this) Wasn't any noticeable vibration before or after, not really sure why the marks weren't lined up before.
Hope this helps.

I need to know how to replace the timing chain on a 2003 nissan altima 2.5 engine.

I really hope you know what you're getting into.....Big & detailed job. I went on and posted the instructions as far as removal and installation of the timing chain. There is a whole other section that you need as far as removing the oil pan and strainer but way to much to post on here at this point. Anyhow, it's a 2 piece oil pan and just to let you know alot of the parts like the timing chain cover, oil pan, the cover on the timing chain cover does not have gaskets and Nissan doesn't either. You have to use some RTV and don't go cheap, get the good stuff because all the work that is involved in this you don't want to have to repeat because of a leak. Also the oil pump is in the timing chain cover and Nissan has had some problems in the past with them. I would suggest going online and finding a new oil pump that comes pre-installed in a new timing chain cover. You can pick the whole assembly including the cover for about $150.00 and worth it. Wish you were here I have one ready to go. Anyhow, email me at csautomotivecars@att.net and what I can do is send you the engine management section of my service manual in a PDF so you have the info on the oil pan removal.....You need it. It will also have all the stuff I am posting below so you can make it big enough to see or even print out if need be and no there isn't a cost for it. I'm in a good mood....lol. I hope this helps. Here is the timing chain instructions for you.

I have a 2005 V6 Altima. It makes a whining noise when I drive it. If I am coming down a steep hill, the sound I hear is like the gear is stuck and not shifting correctly. When I had my oil replaced...

sounds to me like they are right on the money. its a pretty common issue on 3.5 litre engine in a altima, maxima murano and quest. you do need upper timing chains and chain tensoiners. its unfortunate that those cars have an issue, but thats what you need. nissan has been pretty reliable vehicle until the new models came out (1999 and up). The upper timing chains are known to go bad even in some 4.0 litre engines. good luck with that, that is a job that requires some car knowledge and mechanical skill to get it done.

On a 99 nissan altima it has 2 timing chain covers, a top one then a bottom one. Do I need to take off the bottom one to get the chains off right and to get the head off the eng?

Yes. If you dont take both(the top and the bottom) you could get the chain caught on something. It would be much safer to take both ends off. Plus you will have to reset the timing on the car anyways, and in order to do that, you have to line up the marks on the crankshaft. Hope this helps. James Booth. Does 2007 altima 3.5 have a chain or timing belt

After 2002 Altima offers two types of engine: the new 4 cylinder 2.5 L QR model engine which is fairly powerful (175 horsepower) and, I believe, one of the best engine in its class the 3.5L V6 VQ model engine with 240 horsepower. The same V6 model as in in the Nissan Maxima, Pathfinder and Murano.
Both engines feature continuously variable valve timing using a silent chain instead of timing belt. Throttle cable is gone - the throttle operates electronically by wire based on gas pedal sensor readings. This design provides smoother transmission shifting and lower emission.
The 2007 Nissan Altima 3.5L Sedan, has a Timing Chain, and an Ignition Coil Pack. NO DISTRIBUTOR.

'94 Nissan Altima rattles

Hi there,
you will need new upper timing chain and sprockets. Common problem on altima your year. Nissan has TSB for it. First they had us remove the upper timing chain guide, but after that, they had us replace all top chain components.
