Why does it start, then shuts back off?

IF you have recently changed the gauge cluster then the 'security' or 'anti theft' needs to recognize the new cluster. The system will need to be reset.

It's been a few years but if I remember correctly you need to turn the key on, then off 3 times, then turn the key to the on position and leave it there for 10 minutes. Then turn the key off for a few seconds. After that, the vehicle SHOULD start and stay running.

If the gauge cluster hasn't been changed then I really don't have an answer.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Electronic immobilizer

most likely cause is the gauge cluster, this will have to be tested and service by your local dealership because the dash cluster and keys have to be coded. I have seen the immobilizer loose it's coding for apearantly no reason. therefore have them recode cluster and see if problem goes away, if it doesn't the gauge cluster will have to be replaced.

Speedometer

The problem is with the PATS (anti-theft) system in the truck. A major component of it is contained in the instrument cluster's circuit board.

If you still have the old cluster, take the circuit board out and swap it into the new (junkyard) cluster that's there now. If that's not possible you will have to go to the dealer to fix it.

I've swapped those circuit boards before. Just take your time be careful not to damage any of the board. It's actually pretty easy to do. I swapped my regular F-150 gauges for a nice silver Harley set of gauges so I had to swap the circuit board to make the truck start. Then when I sold my truck I swapped it back again.

Oh yeah, the odometer reading is also stored in the instrument cluster circuit board as is some other really important stuff.
