Question about 1989 Buick Park Avenue

1 Answer

1989 park avenue would run about 60 miles then die, could restart immediately, but would go about 4 to 10 miles then die again, could restart immediately but would repeat the 4 to 10 mile thing. A couple trips would go without dying. About three weeks ago it then started having hard crank start, with some backfire, then last week it would not start at all (was quite cold) with backfire (all backfire subtle). Then yesterday it had warmed up and it started without any problems, tried several times and it would start without issue. Today it was a cold day and started fine again this morning with no problem. It has always had a code for either Crankshaft sensor, camshaft sensor or ignition module but I had been thinking more of fuel pump problem. Any ideas???

Check harmonic balancer for slop back and forth,,,,these 3.8's have a crank posision sensor behind the balancer, that run off of the balancer,,,gthe rubber wears out and they start to flop around and timing gets messed up.../they cost around 100 bucks for a aftermarket, and if thats the problem,do yourself a favor and replace CPS while tour at it....good luck...Lee

Car dies

do you have a make and model of the vehicle? does it blow fuses.I would say that the A/C is aftermarket and interfering with the electronics on the vehicle shutting it down. maybe try connecting the compressor to a different power outlet and see what happens..

2003 Ford Taurus will periodically die while driving ! All warning lights will come on and engine will die. It will start again immediately after I put it in 'Park' and I can resume driving

This sounds like a bad connection, the problem is where, i have seen the wiring harness that goes over the transmission rub into wiring and cause engine to shut down and then restart again and run until the right movement is made to shut down again.

Try starting the car and do the wiggle test, start grabing wiring and moving around and see if engine dies out.

2000 buick park avenue ultra starts sputturing and then dies while driving. no lights come on and had the codes checked . shows nothing . just drove 2,500 miles on trip run perfect . now dying again

Is it possible that your getting bad gas in your area? since it ran fine on the trip and now that your back home its not? maybe try a different gas station. if not you'll probably have to take it to a well equipped shop to have it hooked up to a scan tool that can read data while your driving to see the ecm info when the problem occurs.good luck as intermittent engine problems can be difficult sometimes.

My 1990 Buick Park Avenue dies after 15 miles

Replace the crank sensor as they get hot they will sometimes quit working. The temp light comes on everytime the engine is turned off and the switch is on. Next time it dies spray or pour some water on the sensor then see if it will crank and if it does you know what it is.

Sounds like the catalyst converter is restricting the exhaust gasses from the engine causing the problem
