Question about 2000 Kia Sportage

1 Answer

POWER LIGHT The check engine light came on in my 2000 Kia Sportage. It just went over 100,000 miles so I thought it might be a sensor/reading problem, since it went off a day or so later & continues to run GREAT. Yesterday, while on a 3 hour trip, the check engine light again came on & the POWER light came on. I have never had this light come on before, ever. Did not even know it was in the panel. We got to our motel & I parked it. Can anyone tell me what this means & what I need to do? Again, I'm 3 hours from home & towing is not an option in my budget. And I did not plan on mechanical failure when I came on this trip. Of course no one ever PLANS for mechanical failure, but I seriously can't afford it. HELP. And thank you!

There is a button on the right side of the dash if your looking at the steering wheel.
Push the button again and should turn off the power light.

This is an option for climbing hills or when you need a little more from the motor.

The check engine light could mean anything. If the car is running ok then continue on your trip and when you come to an Autozone or Advance auto have them hook up their protable scanner to your Kia's ecm (computer) and they can tell you what the code is and how to fix it.

Don't panic and enjoy the rest of your trip.

Engine misses when cold only under load comes and goes for about 3 mins then all ok runs well after that

Sounds as though the problem is when in open loop

That is when it is cold & your temp sensor & computer
control fuel injector timing

As the temp goes up the O2 Sensors take over
injectors

I would guess the O2 Sensors are over 100,000 miles
You should clean MAF Sensor
Install Spark Plugs-if over 70,000 miles
Also new thermostat & possibly a new temp sensor

Under a load, that puts the EGR Valve into the picture
as vacuum is high
