1989 Lincoln Mark VII Engine back misfires through throttle body

I have a mark Vll with 50,000. miles the engine (5.0) misfires when you try to give it gas. I have cleaned the plugs and changed the cap and rotor. It is also had to start after it sits to long.

Gas filter looks new. What should the fuel pressure be. I also checked the timing. It like its not getting enough gas when give it more gas it back fires through the plenum.

Check the timing but FIRST disconnect the SPOUT connector. reset the timing and check your firing order. It's listed on the emissions sticker on the fan shroud.

I guess my first question would be when was fuel filter changed last? Fuel pressure tested? With an 89 it may be wise to take it for a scan (EEC IV) on that year I believe. Try filter first, then fuel pressure test if that doesn't help, then scan. To start replacing sensors without any codes to tell you where to focus your attention, could cost you more in the long run. It shouldn't cost much for a quick scan for trouble codes. let us know.

Have you performed a compression test on this vehicle ? If not, it would be something I'd do before looking too much further, just for the fact that you say it's backfiring into the plenum. Whether getting enough fuel or not, if timing is on, or real close, you shouldn't get backfiring back up through plenum, unless an intake valve is open at time of ignition. While your at it, you can confirm timing chain didn't jump by getting #1 @ TDC on compression stroke & looking at rotor under distributor.

I need to know the compression on a 1989 5.0 lincoln mark vII motor? Thank you for your help

The compressition isn't that important on an engine this age . The standard rule of thumb is this if you are with in 20 %on all cylinders your Ok . If you have a huge drop on one cylinder or more then you have engine problems

This beautifully kept 1990 Mark Vll LSC has only 44,000 miles on it. After avoiding an accident and slamming the brakes experiencing great ABS performance, I notice third gear in regular drive is out....

HI, there isn't a fuse that can cause your 3rd gear failure and since driving it like this will only cause more damage to the transmission, and the Airbag light is telling you the system is not working. I strongly recommend you take to your service center. Glad your ABS did its job.
