Why when running trans won,t shift gears

no year, no joy for us or you... impossible. all answers USA spec cars. and nobody ever says,,, so......

nor engine size stated, or trans box name.

wont shift hot or cold or both (engine temp)
?

wont, implies and A/t box. which one?

the 42RE.? (ill answer for this box)

keep in mind, im blind, i cant open car, nor drive it.

nor see under that hood.

wild guess, 2004

click WJ here. \' (end of my post)

then click trans case 2

see that and the 2 transmissions>

now my wild guess, 42RE

  1. levels wrong. and fluid pink/red, not back and metal flakes.

  2. fuses blown (yes, test them )

  3. filter never ever changed. #1 killer here.... so common.

  4. Scan the ECU/PCM. plug in (1996+) any scan tool , got DTC errors?

  5. bingo, i bet so far, huh>?

  6. stall tests fails? (yes it does, but and cold engine????.)

  7. Line pressure at spec?. (FSM trans test , in the book , read it?)

  8. Check that the TCM is sending the correct solenoid voltage for Drive mode?. next, if ok the trans is bad.

Automatic transmission problem and solution

Pulling the transaxle out & having it rebuilt,
is the only answer, for 90% of all trans problems

Fluid Changes won't fix anything
New Solenoids in a 10 year old trans won't help for long
Any Slipping recognized or not, your done.

Will go into gear but wont go forward or reverse

First I suggest located the dipstick tube and check trans fluid; if this and quality is OK, could sound like a maintennace request, torque converter wrong or valve colenoids (internal trans).

Hope this helps; also keep in mind that your feedback is important and I`ll appreciate your time and consideration if you leave some testimonial comment about this answer.

Thank you for using FixYa, have a nice day.

Hi, I have a 1998 Chevy 3/4 ton 4x4, automatic transmission, has had problems for quite awhile shifting from second to third and now reverse is out. Shifting solenoid?

Hello, I see you are having a transmission problem. I sorry to be the bearer of bad news.It seems as though you may have already known it but the problem that you have had with second gear, could have been a servo bad but with reverse going out it may be the servo an band in the trans. It will need to be overhauled, in my opinion, since the transmission must now come out. Please rate my answer, Thank you.
