The steering gear box has an adjustment screw on the top cover. Loosen the lock nut and turn the screw clockwise until the slop is reduced. Jack the front end up so both wheels turn freely. Push the wheel right and left while watching the suspension components. If they move up and down. The control arm and ball joints need replacing. Have it done at a good shop that does alignments.

How do I adjust the power steering

Im not aware of any adjustment on a power steering pump other than the tightness of the belt. There will be at least one bolt that the pump rotates on, and one that holds it in place. However, I would have to know the year, make, model etc...Some have no adjustment and belt it kept tight by a tensioner pulley. Look for a bolt that has a slot that it slides in, loosen all bolts until pump is loose and have an assistant carefully keep pressure on it with a thick broomhandle, giant screwdriver, or prybar. Most belts are set to about 1 inch of play.

Check the steering intermediate shaft connection to the steering gear box, its slip shaft and the connection to the stering collumn. if those are ok, its probably slop in the steering gear box. Some of that can be adjusted out on the gear box by your mechanic. You will see either a flat head cut or hex head inset with a lock nut on the top of the gear box. Loosening hte lock nut and tightening the bolt to factory torque setting then releasing it the appropriate specified degress will reset the gear box back to factory settings. Beware if you set this wrong you will cause your steering to bind when turning. Therefore only let a qualified mechanic do this for you.

How do i adjust/fix play in steering

There is a 'dampener' on the steering box- it is a nut that surrounds a bolt (I think it has a allen head)-loosen the surround bolt and tighten the bolt, it dampens the recirculating ball in the steering box. Other than that, steering linkage parts and proper tire alignment are the only other factors that determine 'play' or lack thereof-the steering box can also have slop in it that might require either a rebuild or replacement.

Since the slop is gone, it is probably an alignment problem now-check for binding but in most cases it is a caster issue.

Truck tends to have a lot of slop in the steering, must continually move the steering wheel back a forth (seesawing) to maintain the vehicle in it's lane.

depending on the year, there is an adjustment on the steering gearbox to take the slack out of it. kind of job which needs a trained person with proper tools. you may find that if the vehicle is so old that the steering gearbox is shot, there could be a lot of slop in the tie rod ends and ball joints. Also used to be a steering arm "mirror" unit called an idler, i think, on rear wheel drive vehicles, which sits on the opposite side of the car and keeps the tie rod connector parallel with the line defined by the front axles. If you have one and it is bad could cause your problem.
