Question about 1994 Chevrolet C1500
The truck started grinding and the front drivers side tire locked up. It will roll in reverse but in drive it locks up on me. The transfer case has been broken since I bought it by the way but it has driven fine in 2 H since I got it.

sounds like the clip on the rear output shaft its probably broke. do this by removing the rear driveshaft, and the tail of the transfer case, there are 4 bolts holding it in place. then grab the output shaft and see if it has any front to back movement. if so pull it all the way to the rear and you should see a groove at the front part of the shaft where the clip goes. Then you should find the pieces fo the clip in the tail housing. One person said he found the replacement clip at a local tranny shop. I am calling the dealership parts counter for a new clip for my 97 Tahoe tomorrow. Hope this helps..

It does not seem that sufficient diagnosis was done. No, you cant give a specific diagnosis like that without tearing unit down. It's likely that they told you the most common failure and left it at that. Likely there is a problem with your unit...I think this becomes more of a trust issue than a mechanical one. A second opinion from an independent reputable shop may help but either way, you need to have it fixed. In not using it much, it makes me wonder how it got worn.

SOURCE: transfer case noise
your u joints are gone.it is common on gm trucks,as they are a sealed unit and the needle bearings rust .there are replacement u joints available that have grease nipples on them. there should be very little play, less than 1/8 inch.

The shift solenoid is not controlling the gearing and selection. Should have it ck'd out before it puts you through the windshield. Good Luck. It's more than likely just the solenoid floating.
