No spark from coil to distrubuter


Disconnect the ignition coil output wire at the distributor cap.
Connect a spark plug to the end of the ignition coil output wire which you just disconnected.
Connect a ground wire to the threaded portion of the spark plug.
Disconnect the ignition coil ground wire from the negative terminal on the coil (Green Wire).
Connect one end of a ground wire to the ignition coil negative terminal.
Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
Tap the other end of the ignition coil ground wire jumper on an good grounding point (for example the battery negative terminal) and look for sparks at the spark plug that correspond to the frequency of your tapping of the ground wire.
If you have a good spark at the spark plug, the ignition coil is good.
If you don't get a good spark, check for approximately 12 VDC from the coil positive terminal (black wire) to ground with the ignition switch in the ON position. You should also get approximately 12 VDC from the coil negative terminal (Green wire) to ground
Ignition Coil Resistance Check

In addition to the test above, you may elect to perform an ignition coil resistance check as confirmation of the coil's condition.

Check the ignition coil primary coil resistance by connecting an ohmmeter between the positive (Black wire) and negative (Green wire) terminals on the coil. The resistance should be 0.4 to 0.6 ohms.
Check the ignition coil secondary coil resistance by connecting an ohmmeter between the coil output terminal and the ignition coil negative terminal. The resistance should be 5000 to 7200 ohms.

You may have a bad coil or bad ground or wire connection

Specifically I'm trying to identify the wire on the spark plug coil assembly to which I should connect the signal wire of a Tachometer to. The wire colours are, red, yellow, green/white, and blue.


It says the tachometer wire is Yellow/Green, you do not have that listed. You will find it in the list below, it is highlighted..

94 s10 fuel pump relay clicking no start


The clicking noise at the relay indicates that the relay is bad, or that the wires to the relay and/or connector is bad.

A relay is an electronically activated switch. Inside is a coil. When 12v+ is applied to one end of the coil, and a ground is applied to the other end, the coil gets charged, creating a magnetic field. This magnetic field literally moves a metal lever from position A to position B. One end of the lever is attached to constant battery power. When coil not energized, the lever rests in postion A (which in the case of the fuel pump relay is feeding the battery power to an unused terminal). When the coil is activated, the lever moves to position B (which in this case is a terminal connected to your fuel pump wire). Thus, when the relay is activated, 12v+ is being directed from the battery to the fuel pump.

This fast clicking indicates that the relay coil is not getting a constant voltage or ground supplied to it, thus the lever is moving back and forth between position A and position B, either there is a wiring issue, a connector issue, or an internal issue with the relay.
The relay has 4 wires, black, grey, orange, green with white stripe.
black = ground
orange = battery = 12v+ always
grey = wire out to fuel pump (on some cars this wire is tan with white stripe)
green/white = signal wire from ECM

When key is turned ON, the ECM sends 12v+ out on the green/white wire to the relay for about 2 seconds - this activates the relay coil for 2 seconds, thus running the pump for 2 seconds (priming). When the vehicle is started, the ECM sees a constant ignition signal from the ignition module, and sends a constant 12v+ out on the green/white wire, thus activating the relay coil constantly, and thus running the pump constantly.
When car shut off, no more constant ignition signal, thus ECM stops sending the 12v+ out on the green/white wire.
So, you can kind of test your connector ...
1) remove connector from relay
2) jumper a wire from the slot for the orange wire to the slot for the grey wire - fuel pump should run - wiggle wires to verify at connector
3) probe black wire slot with ohm meter - make sure black wire has constant ground - wiggle wires at connector
test relay ...
1) remove relay from connector
2) rig a ground wire to the tab that had the black wire when in connector
3) apply 12v+ to the tab that had the green/white wire - relay should click once and do this every time you apply the 12v+

That should help you track it down to either a connector problem, a wiring problem, or a relay problem.

The green wire from the tach goes to the negative side of the coil or if its an HEI distributor it will connect to the left of the hot wire going. to the distributor.

Coil quit firing


If you have no spark from two of the four towers of your coil pack, you need to check the wiring between the coil pack and the ignition module. Since you have spark at two towers, that proves you have power to the coil pack. Both sets of coil windings in the coil pack are fed by the same B+ feed,(red and light green wires to both coil packs too). The control side wires from the ignition module to the coil packs are tan/light green and tan/light blue for one coil pack.-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hello! Is the Check Engine Light (CEL) on, indicating a stored fault code? Since you have installed a new Coil I would suggest having a look at the wiring to the coil's connector...1&4 are controlled by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) on the Dark Blue/Dark Green wire...Visually inspect the connector, pins and wiring at the Coil end...If you have a multimeter and a wee bit of knowledge of its use the wire can be tested with a voltmeter...With engine running, measure the voltage on the following wire colors of the coil connector... Dark Blue/Orange...Dark Blue/Tan, and the suspect wire, Dark Blue/Dark Green...All three should read the same...There is a fourth wire in the connector (Brown White)...It is the input ground from the Engine Oil Pressure Switch and must be present...

Without a meter the best you can do is to inspect the connector...It is not as rare as you may think that you replaced a bad Ignition Coil with another bad Ignition Coil...Send a comment...

What do the symbols P and S stand for on terminals of the tachometer? 1978Chev.305 gas engine with distributor and coil.......jn my boat


tach hook up for chevy with hei distribitor is 1)white wire ; 12volt source 2)red wire -12 volt ignition switch (+) 3)black wire -battery ground (-) green wire ; to tach terminal on dist. / if it not hei with points just put green wire to neg. (-) side of coil
