Don't always trust Auto Zone Oreilly's Napa etc...for testing your electrical equipment...remember they are in the business of SELLING parts...whether you need them or not.

Best thing to do here is use a multimeter and check the 12v DC output at the positive battery terminal with the engine running at idle. You should be getting 14.5v DC at all times with the engine running.

Also, check the battery negative and positive connections for corrosion. Many times a corroded terminal is at fault for not allowing full amperage/.voltage back to the battery when the engine is running

Some alternators can be tricky. It may be putting out amperage to keep the system going but not enough to keep up with all the electronics. It may not handle a load. Take it to a place that offers free testing such as Autozone or Advance auto parts. They can check it for you and maybe give you a general idea if it's ok or needs replacement. Make sure the loads are on such as wipers, blower, lights and radio to ensure a better reading. Hope this helps. Good luck.

Battery light on new battery new alternator charging

Could be a wiring problem. The light goes out once the alternator is charging - the alternator then cuts off the ground for the warning light.
The warning light could be grounding thru a different circuit.

How do I connect a warning/ignition light to my alternator?

Hi Glen
All depends what you mean by warning lamp.
Early Alternators used to have a terminal connected to the "Star" winding inside. A 12v lamp connected between here and ground will light up when a charge is available.
But.... the simplest method is to buy LED charge lamp which checked for voltages above 12v (12.5 to 14v} and lights up showing a charge. I can buy a simple device like this from my local Jaycar Electronics store. You should be able to get a similar device depending on where you are

Good Luck

Battery ok alt new battery light stays on

The light means the alternator is not charging the battery. Once the charging circuit is completed, the warning light looses its ground connection.
You may need to double check the circuit going from the alternator to the battery, or the warning light circuit going to the alternator as it could be shorted to ground.

Battery warning light

When the warning light is on, the alternator is not charging the battery.
So you should have the alternator output checked when the light is on.

1999 Toyota Tacoma battery keeps dying

This is easy to test but you need a multimeter. Connect the multimeter to the battery and run the engine at a fast idle (say 2000 rpm). You should get a voltage reading anywhere from 14 to 15 volts if the battery is fully charged and the alternator is working. If the reading is around 12 volts, then the alternator is not working.

88 Izusu Trooper II with 274000 miles Battery warning light comes on when first starting and running- after driving awhile, it goes off and starts charging- also during the warning period- the blower

Sounds like your battery isn't charging properly, first thing to check, is your alternator belt slipping, is it tight enough, if so does it need replacing?

Next the battery, if its over 2 years old it could be on its way out. Does it hold its charge?

Finally, Alternator, is it still providing a charge for the battery? Are all electrical connections good and clean?

Check charging system light came on

hi, the alternator has a wire from ignition to the alternator called the W L lamp. if this comes up the most common fault is the diode pack or comutator brushes. alternator not charging enough or WARNING LIGHT wire grounding to body of the car. some times the WARNING LIGHT wil be very dim all these usually means your alternator will need replacing. gerry

Alt has a small red wire in the plug. what is it for

The circuit it forms part of runs from the battery, throug hthe charge warning light on the dash, the the voltage regulator on the alternator. The wire does two jobs.

When the alternator is generating output, it fails to carry any current (sounds odd, but that's how it is) because there's a similar voltage at each end. As a result, the charge warning light on the dash goes out.

When the alternator is freshly spun up, current flows through this wire (sourced through the warning lamp) to provide the initial excitation for the alternator, allowing it to generate electricity. One the alternator is working, it uses its own power to create excitation.

ALTERNATOR REPLACED WORKING OK NOW TIMING BELT PETROL AND BATTERY WARNING LIGHTS ON WHEN ENGINE RUNNING AND A/CON NOT WORKING

If your battery warning light is on, then your alternator is NOT working okay. Rather, maybe the alternator DOES work, but the battery light can also come on if your battery won't charge.

Put a voltmeter to the battery terminals when the engine is running and rev the engine to a medium idle. Battery charging, (engine running) it should be about 13.5-14.5 volts. Engine off fully charged battery voltage should be 12.6 volts.

Quick test-engine running, disconnect the positive battery terminal from the battery- if the engine dies, there is still an alternator problem.

Hope this helps.

Warning lights stay on

Hi,

Brake light warning indicates possible low brake fluid in the reservoir;

Charge warning light indicates battery not charging which can be caused by defective alternator/regulator, slipping belt, corroded fusible link from alternator to battery B+ terminal.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.
