1995 Pontiac Sunfire Shifter/Starting problem

Woke up today, drove the car just fine, no problems. Started it in the afternoon, picked up my brother still no problems. Went to wal-mart and placed the car in park but the parking brake did not engage and it started to roll forward. So had to use the E-Brake to get the cark parked. Turned the car back on and noticed the shifter was moving freely without any tension at all. Got back home and again it would not remain in park even though the shifter was in park. Tried to turn the car back on for some other errands and now it won't turn on either. So, the shifter moves freely, the car won't remain in park, and now the car will not turn on. What could be the cause of all this?

Sounds like your shift cable is worn out or coming apart. pop the hood and fallow the cable from the trans. to the shifter and look for a sign of wear.

Do you think this would cause the car not to start anymore also? You can't heart anything when you turn the key.

The car has to be in Park or Neutral in order to start. When the linkage is broken, you can't know what gear it's in. I had this problem in another car. Until I got the replacement part, I put the E-brake on and shifted it manually. Like the previous writer said, follow the cable from the shifter to the transmission. At the transmission, you'll find where the cable connects to the shifting switch. It helps to have a Haynes manual. They come with pictures of just about everything on your car.

When I said shifting switch, I meant lever. There should be a little lever coming out of the transmission.

Shift cable is bad or out of adjustment
& there may be a switch that has to be
in the correct position to start the car

When you say switch, what could that be related to? I'm down for looking in there myself to see if I can do anything.

Like a neutral safety switch to prevent the car from starting unless in park or neutral

I see, do you know if in these cases I would be able to hear the engine trying to turn over? Because it's making no sound at all when trying to turn the ignition.

98 Pontiac Sunfire - Started and drove to work today as normal. Tried to start the car an hour later and it cranked and turned over but would not stay running. I'm told it may be a clogged fuel filter. ...

Try fuel filter if you haven't changed it recently. It is a place to start. If you have not tuned it up recently do that also. Always do preventitive maintenance first before thinking its a major problem.

99 Sunfire Coolant keeps dumping

You need to find the source of the leak. it hasn't overheated yet because you keep catching it and re-filling. From your description, it sounds a lot like a bad water pump seal (part of pump) but without physically looking you can't be sure of that. when the pump seal begins to fail, internal pressure while running often will drive the seal tighter against the shaft stopping the leak. as pressure drops as the engine cools, the seal relaxes and permits seepage.
With time, that will change and it will leak all the time.

96 pontiac sunfire wont start.....

Starter solenoid , or wire that leads to it.

Also , if standard transmission , may be the switch on clutch pedal is intermitant.

Engine won't turn over unless it thinks you have your foot on the clutch.
