IS that vibration related to RPM? If so the harmonic balancer and or the crank shaft might be out of balance. If it is not related to RPM, then you need to check to see if the shafts are all installed correctly and the motor mounts are ok. It could also be the tires flat spotted if they sat a long time.

try the internet web sites for belt ,there are 2 types dependent on engine ,if you thinking of changing timing belt you will nee to order a special timing kit ,to hold crank and fly wheel ,i have changed one o a 2.5 crd engine ,takes about 7 hours ,the other 2 belts are easy to replace ,just remove air filter housing ,jack engine up remove engine mount ,pulley wheel for belt can be seen ,need a spanner to hold nut on pulley wheel, pull it up to remove,ac belt is stretch fit ,so just pull it over ,using a screw driver .hope this helps you .

2000 olds alero cranks then makes a metal grinding sound and won't start

You need to have your flywheel: replaced.Your starter motor engages against the fly wheel at the back of the motor. Every time your motor stops it tends to be in the same few positions (just the way things work) so there is more stress on some parts of your fly wheel than others. Because of this the teeth wear out on the fly wheel which means the starter can correctly engage on the fly wheel which is the grinding noise.

Grinds when the car has been stalled for a bit and then started. Sounds like a metal scraping noise. Also when decelerating or reaching a stop it whines and towards the end if broken abruptly it does

The grinding noise when you are braking is worn out pads. Metal against metal is not good for your discs - replace the pads otherwise your up for machining of the discs or replacing. That noise on start-up is common with worn teeth on the fly wheel. The fly wheel will stop in "common" positions just how the momentum of the motor works and the teeth can wear out at these spots - sounds horrid but is not "unsafe" problem is one day you may not be able to start the car if the starter cannot engage the fly wheel to turn the motor over. This is where you hear of people turning the motor over a little by hand (they usually remove the stone plate from below the fly wheel to hand crank the engine) I don't recommend this practice probably better to price a replacement and while it is apart consider any other work eg. Clutch or minor seal leaks as it is not a small job to replace the flywheel.

My b/f has a 1990 Fleetwood Cadillac...He believes the fly wheel may be broken...Where is the fly wheel and are they easy to replace?

Flywheel is between the motor and transmission the starter actually runs the flywheel to start the motor. To change it you will have to pull the transmission away from the motor to get to the bolts that hold it to the motor. Not the easiest thing to replace by any means.

Cost to replace starter & flywheel on a 2003

for the starter and flywheel 1400 sounds right they would have to take the tranny out to get to the fly wheel but why do they need to replace the fly wheel did your old starter do a lot of grinding its not to often you have to replace a flywheel unless the starter wrecked it somehow again not to often starters are ment to break before it wrecks the flywheel the flywheel made of harder metel i would get a second opinion on replacing the flywheel

Fly wheel needs to be replaced

Yes you do. If it's 4x4, i find it easier to pull the motor.

1970 ford f100 390cu. The started motor gets locked up about one a week. I pull the starter motor and test it by hot wiring it directly to the battery and it works for about a week until it gets lockup...

You may need to shim the starter and I would have the starter tested. It is not uncommon to purchase a faulty elecrical part of any type from a part store.

Motor mount

Front mount is is under crank--rear is under where fly wheel used to be--if I remember right, the bolts are horizontal to the crossmember.
