SOURCE: RESETTING THE TRIP METER
Press the info button until you see Trip A or Trip B. Once you are looking at the Trip meter you want to reset, press and HOLD the info button. After 3 seconds, the dashboard will beep and the Trip meter will reset to zero.

Clearly those are the symptoms of a loss of electrical power. Simple
things to check: the battery cables are tightly connected to the
battery, and if your battery has removable caps, check the battery fluid
levels. If low, fill to the proper level with distilled water. Your
battery may not be fully charged. If a shop that does free
battery/alternator testing is conveniently available to you (e.g. Penske
auto center at a Kmart), it might be worth having them check the
condition of the battery.
From what I have read on various VW forums do a search of "relay 109". That relay can be blamed for a multitude of symptoms. But since you got the car started, I'm not sure I would put it as the number one suspect.
