Question about 1994 Volvo 940

Stalling my car was running fine than all of a sudden it started stalling while i was in the middle of driving at 35 miles an hour it would just shut down, now it wont stay running when i can get it started, i changed the distributor rotor, and the igntition coil. i dont know what else it could be. thanks

It can be the above. Also check the fuel system relay switch. It may be not contacting well because of the age of the car.These relays will contact at times and even a bump on the road will set it off.

  If the problem is in the fuel system, the symptoms are identical to running out of gas, where the motor runs down gradually when fuel is no longer supplied.  When a  spurt of fuel is restored (as fuel is bounced into the fuel pump intake) the motor will restart and stop gradually as the fuel is no longer supplied. This type of problem can be caused by constantly running low on fuel.  The sediments in the tank are drawn into the fuel filter and eventually can inhibit flow by blocking. The easiest way to solve this type of problem is to replace the fuel filter.         I have a 1980 Volvo 240 and have managed to keep it running fine, though problems like this have popped up in the past.  Did you replace the coil wire as well as the ignition coil?  This wire connects the ignition coil and the distributor.  All power to the distributor runs through this cable.     My car had problems whenever it rained or if there was humidity under the hood.  It would start fine but until it was warmed up it would stall out and run very poorly.  Once I replaced the coil wire this problem vanished.      What you described sounds like an electrical problem.  When an electrical problem occurs with the symptoms you described, current is stopped to the ignition system and the motor suddenly stops without notice.The voltage regulator could be the problem.  Your car has a computer chip to regulate voltage electronically making problems like this more difficult to diagnose.  If one cable or ribbon connector is loose it could cause a problem like the one you are having.        I have a much older car than you.  I Hope my suggestions have been helpful. You might have a computer problem, which would make the diagnosis and solution more complex.  Without experiencing the problem firsthand my solution amounts to conjecture.  I wish you the best of luck in solving it.  Please don't hesitate to give me more information as you discern your problem more exactly.  I will help as I can.   Michael

Check to make sure that it's getting fuel. try spraying some starter fluid into the throttle body, then turn it over, if it starts for a second or two, the problem is with the fuel system. the same thing would happen with my dodge, and i replaced the fuel pump and haven't had a problem since.

Drivability problems after driving 20 - 30 miles


Try changing or switching out the distributor. Most likely getting hot and shuts down. Does it crank but no start whenever it stops? May only start when it cools down again.

You may need to be looking at your Torque Converter being in LOCK UP and forcing it to stall because the Transmission is not letting go of the Motor...

You may also have a Plugged CAT CONVERTER

Test the Temp BEFORE and AFTER.. There should be an INCREASE of at least 100 degrees on the BACK from the Front

91 volvo 240 - keeps stalling out, shakes a lot when idling


for the cheapest TEMPORARY solution get some fuel injector cleaner and get on the gas fo about 5 mile at like 100 - 120 miles an hour thats what idid to mine last week hasnt wanted to die out since. good luck.
