Check the short length of vacuum hose between the purge flow sensor and the canister purge solenoid. There is a metal nub, part of a bracket of some sort, that this hose rests up against. Over time from engine vibrations, a hole wore through the hose where it was rubbing against the nub. It was hard to notice at first since the part of the hose you can see looks ok, but the hole is on the underside. I had P1443 and replacing this hose fixed it, took 2 minutes.

P1443 is the Evaporative Emission Control System Control Valve. Any time you get this code always check your gas cap. If it is not installed all the way, or leaks, it can cause the evap emission code to come up. If the cap is okay...
The problem is probably caused by the Canister Purge Assembly. This assembly connects the intake manifold to the charcoal canister and the assembly is made up of hoses, a valve and a sensor. On the 1997 Ranger, it is located near the front of the engine compartment on the driver's side (the canister is right behind the driver's side headlight). Apparently, if there are any cracks in the hoses, or if the valve or the sensor wears out, this will cause the check engine light to come on, and return the P1443 code.

sounds like a failed evap pressure sensor, or a blocked hose between the purge valve, or evac valve stuck closed. this problem is definitely in the emissions system.

You may have a EGR valve plugged exhaust gas passage, so when it is opened the systems computer doesn't see any change in the O2 signal voltage. To check this manually pull open the EGR valve, the engine should run very rough and will stall out most times, if you open the valve up and see no change in the engine idle the passages are plugged with carbon and must be cleaned. As long as you have this EGR problem the car will not pass smog.
