Ford escort 55 van cold start problem 1.8 diesel 2001

Hi, Just recently after a very wet spell I have been having trouble with cold starting my Ford Escort 55 1.8 diesel van. I bought it this year [second hand] and the previous owner told me it had new glow plugs installed last year. I have power to the glow plugs [checked with voltmeter 12V] and I took out a glow plug and turned on the ignition and it does glow. Once warm it starts straight away, but to get it going I have to constantly crank the engine and then it eventually splutters into action with black smoke which soon clears. Any ideas and help greatly appreciated. Cheers.

I've put in some new NGK glow plugs, a new fuel filter and air filter and it starts great now.

SOURCE: changing glow plugs in a 1997 1.8 ford escort diesel van

Hi Patrick.

I would check that you are getting a live feed to your glow plugs terminals first, on cold starting, with a 12v test light.

Expensive to renew them, and then find it was the fuse or relay !

Best of luck !

You havent said which engine you have got so I presume it is the 1.8 diesel. Therefore, when you go to start it when it is cold, wait for the glow plug light to go off then wait approx another 15 seconds as the glow plugs continue to heat up after the light goes off before you try to start it.

Check your fuel pump and the starter. It's either of the two that has fault.

How much oil will a ford escort van 1.8 diesel

if you have the owners manual-look in the index for oil capacity, or fluid capacities. that should inform you of the oil type and capacity (if you change the filter as well, it will prob. take another half-quart or so. the manual should inform you.
if no manual get on ford website, and search for escort 1.8L diesel van. precede with the year of model.it may inquire whether you have a/c, 4wd, etc. may need more oil, if so.
good luck!

For a short term solution, you could run a small electric heater within the engine compartment which will keep everything nice and warm for your early morning starts.
I remember my father using an extension trouble light and leaving it under the engine compartment during the winters.

I had this problem on my '98 Ford Escort ZX2.
It did not need a new blower but a $15 Blower Motor Resistor.  The wires and connectors rusted out.
