I WAS TOLD TO CHECK FUSES... I DID AND THEY WERE GOOD BUT I STILL CHANGED THEM... I WAS TOLD TO CHANGE THE BULBS IF IT WASN'T THE FUSES... I BOUGHT NEW BULBS AND UPON INSTALLING SAW THE BULBS THAT WERE IN WERE STILL GOOD BUT I CHANGED THEM ANYWAY. STILL NO REVERSE LIGHTS WHEN BACKING UP... NOW SOMEONE MENTIONED IT COULD BE THE SWITCH... I HAVE NO IDEA WHERE TO LOOK OR BEGIN WITH THIS PROBLEM. I PURCHASED THIS CAR OFF INTERNET AND HAVE SPENT THREE TIMES WHAT I PURCHASED THE CAR FOR IN FIXING IT... VERY UPSET AND FRUSTRATED NOW... PLEASE HELP... IF SOMEONE KNOWS WHAT TO DO CALL ME... 347 524 3248 ASK FOR SAL
Yes the switch is almost certainly the problem, it is located on the top of the trans under the lever that moves to select gear ranges, hard to miss, it has a large multi-wire connector on it, it is adjustable so make sure u make a mental note of the position of the 2 bolts (these retain the switch to the trans case) in the switch adjusting slots. The switch is called either the nuetral safety switch or the transmission range switch.
Here is a picture, it may be black also.
here is another photo
same switch slightly different designs, depends on when car was built.

i just replaced the switch for another problem I have been having with this **** car. Anyway now my backup lights are not working. How would I adjust the trans switch if at all possible. To get the lights to work the fuse is fine the bulbs are fine. I have spent a small fortune on this car in the last 3 months. i need to get the sticker.
I have an 02 windstar. I just put a new trans switch in trying to solve another problem I had. I just noticed that my backup lights are not working. Can I adjust the switch so that the lights will work. I have since checked the fuse and bulbs all are fine. I have spent about 1K on this in the last 3 months and need to get a sticker it has expired.
