SOURCE: fuel gauge problem

The nature of the gauge is that it should behave with a linear taper between full and empty. If it works when full but then malfunctions as the level drops, the variable resistor in the sending unit which is housed along with the fuel pump in the gas tank is almost certainly at fault. The sending unit will have to be replaced to fix the problem. Expect this to be an expensive endeavor.

Why won't the fuel gauge work?

The power wire from the sending unit runs to the gauge. Since it is showing 3/4 all the time. It is a break in the wire or really high resistance. I would check resistance of the ground wire first. If it is good(less than 5.0 ohms), I would replace the power wire from the pump to the gauge. I assume the gauge goes to empty with the key off. If not the gauge is bad.

2005 Jeep Liberty won't start, fuel pump won't run, fuel tank is full but gauge reads empty. Suspect ground wire as it is common to both but can't find ground connection

Just take any wire and hook it up to car ground - then take the other end of wire and hook it up to the ground side of fuel pump. If the pump and gauge have a common ground as you say, this should restore operation to both units. If gauge still does not work then it does not have a common ground with the pump and needs its own ground.

2000 Dakota quad cab fuel gauge wont work, jumps to full when started, fuel pump has been replaced. What next?

Check for a frayed wire touching metal and grounding out. The gauge works on resistance and it registering full indicates a short to ground. Either that or your gauge itself is bad.

What part do I need? Fuel level sensor? Or One way check valve?

Check for a bad ground connection at the fuel tank. This is the most common problem associated with fuel gauges. If all the wires are in good shape at the tank, sometimes it is a good idea to run a ground wire from tank ground to frame. Other than that the fuel gauge is may need replacement.

Gas gauge says full but car runs out of gas just below full

This is one of two things, it could be the fuel level sender or a bad fuel gauge, a bad gauge would mean replacing the cluster,
I would run gas low and drop the tank, remove the fuel assm, the sender is the part that holds the pump, i will enclose a picture to show you. This being a 1996 Bonneville i would bet its the sender in the tank.i would change the fuel pump while you have the tank down. Also check wiring and connector as some of these pumps will tell you to replace the wiring and connector, this is supplied with the new pump.If you are replacing the pump also then replace the fuel filter.\The only problem is make sure you spray the line to the sender on the top side of tank and let soak. this is if there are rusted. in my area they are rusted on these older cars. good day. have enclosed the picture of the fuel pump and the sending unit . hope this is helpful.4_15_2012_10_34_13_pm.jpg4_15_2012_10_34_39_pm.jpg4_15_2012_10_34_53_pm.jpg

Gas gauge in the dash malfunctioning - 1990 Nissan Hardbody truck

It sounds like the float on the sending unit is sinking. Don't know what the float is made of, but over time, it will soak up gas and start to get heavy. This would cause your problem. I don't think it's the gauge, but if you want to test it, disconnect the wires at the tank. The gauge will either go to full or empty. If you ground the sending wire, the gauge should respond the opposite way it was. good luck
