96 Jeep Grand Cherokee wont go into reverse

My car will shift in to Drive and Neural and move forward when I push the gas peddle. When I put it in reverse, it will not move when I push the gas peddle. It seems to be not engaging. What seems to be the problem(s)?

I hope it is the tranny fluid. If it is not that, would the entire tranny need to be replaced? Or would it just need to be repaired? What is the cost of something like this and what would they do?

Chheck your tranny fluid. if it's ok, probably need tranny work done.

tranny work is expensive sorry to say. it all depends on how bad it is and how honest the repair shop is. if it's to much, try a junk yard for a used one and just replace it. it'll be much cheaper, all you'll have to pay for is the labor work. but it still can cost$$$. sorry.

Check the T.V. Cable linkage at the tranny end. Make sure the return spring is pulling the linkage back on its own. I fixxed a 96 and an 02 shifting at 3000+ by spraying this linkage and cable with WD40 and working it back and forth untill it moved all the way to the peddle up position by its self. Parts were rusty and sticking when turned past a point.

My 96 jeep Grand Cherokee started blowing a bunch

It sounds like you may have blown the radiator. The transmission cooling lines go to the radiator, that's why you are seeing anti-freeze too. Don't try to drive it anymore, if the transmission is low on fluid, you will ruin it in no time, if you try to force the vehicle to go. Have it towed to a shop.

No reverse 1994 jeep grand cherokee larado atomatic

Well, most likely it is a burned out reverse clutch pack. Which would require a trip to a tranny shop. The sooner the better, the longer you drive with the debris in the tranny the higher the likely hood of requiring a complete rebuild instead of just the reverse clutch pack. I hope this helps please rate this thank you

2001 jeep grand cherokee wont reverse in

This could be an issue with the shift solenoid , but can also be caused by low fluid due to a leak, check your fluid. Is there a check engine light on, if there is it could be a solenoid issue.

Transmission

Check your rear emergency brakes. A brake shoe pin could have broke and the shoe locks up in 1 direction. but not the other. The other problem you mentioned could happen, but if it is in reverse the trans shifted.

HI, It may seem obvious, but sometimes overlooked.... have you checked the oil level, as low oil can cause some strange things to happen! My 96 4 liter would be reluctant to move sometimes, but after I topped it up, it has been fine.

Shifting lever doesnt lock

Likely the shift detent mechanism is broken. It's inside the unit and can be reached by removing the trans pan. It should be just inside where the shift lever goes through the case.
