SOURCE: 97 Dodge Ram Pick up cranks ok engine won't run

try checking all the ground circuits comming out of the PCM. and its also not common for a ground driver in the PCM to fail on dodges. also i have seen crankshaft sensors short out and take out pcm communication. so i would start by unplugging any sensor that runs off the 5v supply until the pcm wil talk to the scanner. if you unplug a sensor and communication returns to scanner then replace the sensor. and dont forget to check for good power and ground at the data link conector and PCM

SOURCE: Charging problem on 1996 Dodge Ram 3500 Cummins Turbo Diesel

I had the same problem on a 94 dodge with the cummins. It seems the crank sensor that reads from a notch on the harmonic balancer was the problem Without this sensor reading that the engine is running the alternator wont charge. Possibly the same problem with yours

I have a 2001 Dodge Cummins 2500. When I Turn on the lights, the engine dies. It's showing codes 1693,1694, and 1689. The scanner said, No comm. between ECM and IPM. ECM detected it could not...

The first thing I would do is check the alternator for output. It should be about 13.5 volts at idle. Then have someone turn on the headlights and see what the reading is. It should drop some momentarily but should go back up to your original reading. Use a separate ammeter, not the one on the dash to get an accurate reading. I would suspect there is a problem in your alternator, likely a burnt diode, or wearing out, but it may also be the belt is loose, not enough tension. Insufficient power from your charging system could give the codes you are seeing. Uf there isn't sufficient power for the truck to run with the lights on then the ECM and IPM would not be able to communicate.

Not able to communicate with PCM with diagnostic scanner

did you really check all fuses. (using an ohmmeter)
what engine, I4 or V6?????
are you posting to someone elses PCM Com problem or what?
is this just and alternator issue , how confusing can this be....
PCM> coms. fails.
3 possible.
1: pin 16 in the OBD2 conn, is not 12vdc. blown fuse. (use a voltmeter)
2: wrong scan tool old tool , on modern CAN buss car will fail. 100%
dead. (open SCAN tool book read if it supports CAN buss)
3: Dead PCM or id bet its , a fuse blown to it.

now i do ALT.
18v is bad. (using a quality DMM or radio shack 1960 meter?)
it means the ALT regulator OUT of CONTROL. ( or bad wiring to it)
changed what?, alt is new, used, rebuilt, barrowed? what.?
This car , im looking it up now, at alldata.com so could you,
or the FSM.

this ALT has a regulator, but is just a slave to the PCM.
in that the PCM controls the REG with 3 wires.
the diagnosis is not easy , i recommend, the FSM
it covers all steps., in the diagnosis,

top fail reasons.
1: bad fuses.
2: bad wiring and connections. (see schematic)
3: bad battery (not you) (open cells cause REG to shut down. )
4: bad ALT. (i say a fella change alt 5 times, and skipped #2)
5: bad PCM. (last, , show me that tests, in FSM)

all that and tons more in the FSM. read it.

or log in to alldata.com and read the Charging pages.

My 1992 dodge ram power 250 cummins turbo diesel wont charge replaced alt and battery and still wont charge what can be my problem?

My 1992 Cummins W250 auto trans turned out to be the Computer/ECM mounted on front fender by battery tray. Mine only acted up in cold wheather. It started out with the ASD (auto shut down relay) clicking rapidly. In addition the water in fuel, wait to start and check engine light also blinked fast. In this state, the battery would not charge.

2008 Dodge Ram 2500 6.7L cummins deisel. One day it will run fine the next day it will be constantly going into limp mode "or" the engine light will go on and the truck seems to run okay.

Take it to the shop and ask them to read the on board diagnostic codes stored in the ECU. Most vehicles carry a 3 year manufacturers warranty, regardless of what the dealer offers. If the dealer wont fix it free of charge, appeal to the original manufacturer directly.
