Question about Cars & Trucks

1 Answer

2001 Chevy Cavalier gear shifter just stopped changing gears. It feels like it's not connected anymore. Very loose. Is it something I can change myself?? What is it? I was very recently hit from behind, idk if that has anything to do with it. Minor damage. Was driving fine. 24 hours later I was parking at home from running errands, put it in park and nothing. It's as if it is in neutral. Won't change to drive, reverse or park. Cranks up fine. Pleaase help!!!

Look on top of the transmission and you will see a cable that is no longer connected to it's arm. Replace the missing clip.

SOURCE: car will not shift into gear

Sounds like a linkage/cable to me. Disconnect the linkage at the transmission and move the shift actuator by hand to see if there is the same things happening. Don't try to do this with the engine running unless someone is holding the brake inside the car.

Chevy cavalier gear shifter

if it is s manual box remove the gear lever tower from the top of the box and see what damage was done to the bottom of lever and/or lever pivot pin in the tower. Remember normal gear boxes require a gentle shift to allow the syncro rings to work properly and if you want to do racing changes get yourself a specially built box.

Your shifter cable sounds like it separated from the transmission or shifter or just broke. you are probably stuck in a moving gear so the neutral safety switch is disabling the ignition.

Do you still feel the same feedback from gear lever when you change gear or it appear loose? It looks like a gearbox problem, maybe due to low gearbox oil something has broken inside the gearbox.

the shifter cable may have worked loose or broken. do you feel the same resistance that you used to when shifting? or just a very loose floppy shifter,if so,i suggest a broken or loose shifter cable.thank you for choosing fixya.com and by the way no relay will keep your shifter from shifting gears from park to drive, reverse.

Manual transmission shifter will not engage

Sounds to me that the shifter broke, i believe the shifter has a ball end that slips into a pocket in trans. that moves for gear selection and that ball brook off end of shifter. if its got a linkage set up most likely samething either shifting arms came off or shifter broke where linkage rods connect.
