Re: Where is the starter located on a 1989 Mitsubishi...
See Figure 1 The
starter motor is located on either the lower right hand (passenger) or
left hand (driver) side of the engine, bolted to the transmission
housing with two mounting bolts.
Disconnect the negative battery cable.
Removal and installation of the starter motor will require access from both the top and bottom of the engine compartment. Fig.

heavy component, be careful when lifting it out of the vehicle

the vehicle on the frame or transmission crossmember, with jackstands.
Before working under the vehicle, make sure the vehicle is stable on
the jackstands. If it is not, reposition the jackstands so that it is.
Label and disconnect all wiring connectors at the starter.
loosen the two starter mounting bolts until they are loose enough to
take out by hand. Since the starter motor is uncommonly heavy for its
size, it is important to support it well with one hand, while removing
the two mounting bolts with the other hand. If the starter is not
adequately supported, it could fall causing injury. Remove the starter
from the vehicle.

Standing in front of the car you should see a small square "window" on the passenger side of your cap. just barely in front of the passenger side valve cover. #1 is the first hole past that window toward the firewall or about 8 o'clock on the cap. The rotor button turns clockwise and the firing order is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2. Hope this helps.
Sparkplugs go down into the engine. You have as many as cylinders you have. Four cylinder, four plugs, six cylinder, six plugs. The plugs carry spark through the wires that hook to your distributor cap. Most caps are located on the right of the engine. That cap hooks to your distributor. So, if you have a four cylinder engine, you have four wires. You should see them crossing the engine block. The plugs are down in the engine block. The wires go into the engine block. Unless you have coils, which look like a small square, it has plugs.
LOOK ON DRIVER SIDE.LOOK ON BACK FIREWALL YOU SEE BRAKE POWER BOOSTER UNIT IT LOOKS LIKE BIG METAL BOWL WITH LARGE VACUUM LINE GOING TO IT.THE MASTERCYLINDER CONNECTED TO BIG METAL BOWL LOOKING UNIT.MASTERCYLINDER HAS FOUR SMALL METAL BRAKE LINES TO IT AND IT HAS A SMALL BLACK SCREW CAP ON IT.AND THE CAP WILL SAY BRAKE FLUID.THATS YOUR MASTERCYLINDER.
Check the coil, a good test is to change the coil with another cylinder and see if the misfire moves to that cylinder, if it moves then you will know its the coil make sure to mark it so you know which one to replace, this is very common for coils to go bad, heres a diagram to help you locate #4 cylinder.couldnt get diagram but if its a four cylinder then #4 is the last one back if its a 6 cylinder then it will be the first cylinder on the driverside .first cylinder from the front to rear,
if a 2.2 four-cylinder, remove the starter motor. disconnect the 7x crankshaft position wiring and harness connector. remove crankshaft retaining bolt and withdraw sensor from engine block. replace the "O" ring and lightly lubricate it with new engine oil. installation is reverse of removal. have a good one !!
