Just a stab in the dark here. maybe starter drive bad, or starter sellinoid, or the worst case teeth gone on one section of flywheel. i would say its either starter drive or starter sellinoid. either case starter has to be removed. hope this helps. OLD SCHOOL.

I have a 2000 Mercury Mystique IT is not wanting to start once I get it started it runs fine but it is getting harder to start

if it seems to be turning over slower than you remember, when it was easy to start . the bushings in the starter are probably worn allowing the armature to make contact
with the field coils in the starter case.
this then causes a severe amperage draw on the battery, which in turn drops the voltage to computer and ignition circuit below 12 volts while cranking

For the 1999 Mercury Mystique Water Pump Belt on 2.5L V6 Engine:

Probable Causes: Belt: worn out, started slipping. Overheating caused by failure of Belt. Lost antifreeze: caused by failure of belt, not turning Water Pump Pulley, not circulating anitfreeze, which resulted in overheating.

Click on the following free direct Link. It has the Serpentine & Drive Belt Diagrams and Tensioners for your 2.5L Engine.
Scroll down the Page (about 1/3rd down) to Diagram #G99H08189, it shows the specific Water Pump Belt.
Note the Tensioner.

I have a 97 too, got it used and have had it for 6 years. Mine has over 120,000 miles on it. transmission has been replaced, now the alternator just went out. My car did this "cugging" and trying to stall for the longest time before the alternator went.
You should check all the hoses for sludge build up (especially if you let the gas get below 1/4 tank), then check the battery and altanator. These seemed to be the major problem with the car. Although now the electrical system in the car is going.
To make alternator repairs at a shop is just under $400.00 or you can do it yourself for parts and about 30mins of work for $170.00.
You can have the battery and alternator checked at Advanced auto parts or Discount auto parts for free.

Hope this helps! Other than that save your money and get out of that car!
