Question about 1996 Chevrolet Monte Carlo

1 Answer

Gas smell After I turn on the car, there is some gas smell inside the car. After turning off the engine, when I am outside the car, the gas smell is also strong. Is this a huge problem? Shall I have it fixed right away? Could I get some kind of solution or something to stop leaking (somewhere) myself? Many thanks. I truly appreciate all your help.

Well it sounds like a problem ....either there is a hole in gastank or a hole in the gas line somewhere ....if it smells after you start then it it is probly in the line coming from the tank....if you park on a clean driveway or somthing ...start the car and let it run for a bit and then either look under to see if it is dripping somewhere , or move the car and see ,then you can tell about where it is leaking ...would get it fixed soon , if it gets bigger then the car won't start if it doesn't get enough gas .
Hope this helps

Smell gas inside

On my 2004 Chrysler Pacifica I noticed a gas smell inside the cabin. I could also smell the gas very strong inside the engine bay when the car was running. It turned out to be a plastic line that connects between the fuel line from the tank, and the fuel rail which was leaking fuel. This line was located on the right side of the engine bay under the air cleaner. This was right next to the HVAC system, which was why I was smelling it in the cab of the car so much.

Possible fuel tank leak. Is the smell inside the car? If so there is an inspection cover under the back seat. If outside mist likely the fuel tank filler neck us rusted and leaking.

Gas smell inside outside the car. poor gas mileage

Check the fuel hose and clamps from the filler to the tank .check hose for cracks . The smell will probably be strongest in the boot.

Strong gas smell outside

There was a recall recently on the Subaru Bajas for the fuel pump outlet. You could smell gas from inside and outside the car. I had mine replaced in April.

Gas Smell when heater turned on

When the heater is turned on, it is drawing in air from the cowl at the bottom of the windshield outside the car. If your smelling gas when you turn it on, it would suggest to me that there may be a fuel leak under the hood. A lot of Honda's have the fuel filter under the hood against the firewall. Open the hood, and see if the gas smell is any stronger, or any gas smell at all for that matter. I would strongly recommend getting the car checked as soon as possible, if you can find the source of the smell yourself.

95 nissan quest - strong smell of exhaust in the cabin area

The exhaust leak is almost always broken studs on the exhaust manifolds. It makes a tick noise when cold and usually goes away when the engine warms up. After a year or so, the noise doesn't go away.

Your heater-a/c air intake is at the base of the windshield through the screen on the passenger side. WHen the exhaust leaks from the manifold, the exhaust gas gets sucked into the air intake.
You can put the heater in recirc mode and it will draw air in from inside the car instead of though the outside air intake. You can't leave it in recirc for long in winter or your car will get ice or fogging on the windows from too much humidity. Take it off recirc after 10 minutes.
