Screech at startup, air conditioner causes shutoff

I have a 2001 Chevy Caviler. Recently, when I start the car, it makes a loud screech right at startup. I've tried taking it to a mechanic, but the problem comes and goes, so they were unable to reproduce the noise when it was in the shop. Also, if I start the air conditioner while the car is running in park, the engine will shut off. If I am driving, the engine bogs down heavily so much that I am forced to turn off the air-conditioner. What could be causing this?

Do you think it would be a problem with where the belt turns the AC compressor? Maybe it's having a problem turning, and when the AC is on, causes the belt to slow.

When the air is on there should be some feature that makes sure the idle is brought up so if you slow down or stop the car won't stall. You would think a repair shop would check it over more completely, they should have a data base of the cars features.

Did the shop not road test it with you driving & then them?

Did you not explain about the a/c shutting off or the drivablity
issues.

Yes... I explained that. The problem is that it's come and go. When I brought it in, the car didn't make the noise at startup, and didn't have the problem with the air-conditioner. They didn't do a road test as far as I know.

I wouldn't deal with any repair shop doesn't road test before & after any work is done. You don't drive a car inside & the customer don't have any issues except on the roadways right. You wonder why they never find anything,I don't,i know why

SOURCE: My air conditioner is not blowing out "cold" air and makes noise

The anti coolant is what is added to your radiator so that the water does not freeze when the temp goes down and damage your pump. hence do not confuse this with the air conditioner. When you put on the a/c the load noise could be the engagement of the solenoid coupling your a/c compressor to the engine. If you notice within the bonnet for the gas filling inlet there must be signs of cooling. if not check over the condenser filter on the glass window for any signs of gas or gas pressure , smoky means low gas but a good pressure of gas indicates good visiblity. If not there has been a gas leak and your whole a/c system needs a check right from the compressor to the condenser to the cooling coils inside the dash. The leak has to identified by a pressure check with air filled, check for blocks before the gas can be filled. The compressor pump pressure must be checked or must be overhauled, replacement of the O rings, and reset. I hope you got an idea to proceed and hope I could help. Good day.

I recently replaced the tire rod in the front of my car. now the car makes a screeching sound when i turn the wheel

Your front end is now out of alignment because the TR end has to be done by a alignment tech. I;m assuming that it's a louder tire screech in one direction more than the other, too.

Short duration screech when car is started. Last longer in cold weather. Had top two belts replaced within last 24 months. apparently there are three belts.

One of the belts is loose. I would say it is the Alternator Belt.
What happens is that when you use the battery to start the car, the alternator immediately attempts to charge the battery back up once the car starts.
If the belt is loose, the belts slips some, making that horrible screech, until the battery is charged enough that the belt no longer slips, because the alternator no longer needs to make as much power, and the screech goes away.

Check to see that your alternator belt is the next one to replace, and tighten it up to specs.

The blower is located under the passenger side however, the screech in the engine are is most likely a lose belt. Tighten or replace your belts and teh sound should go away.

2001 Pathfinder screeches on start

Remove the belt and check all pulleys for smooth operation. any binding at all is amplified when belt tension is applied. also check the belt itself...If it's glazed or dried out, it can be noisy.

97 Neon Expresso, Schreeching Fan

Both your air con and defogger (I am assuming you mean front windshield defroster setting, and not the back window) engage the air conditioner pump/compressor.

The screeching can be either a bad belt or a bad compressor.

How long has it been since the belt was changed? If it is old, and slipping, it will cause the screech at speed.
If the belt has recently been changed, and is adjusted properly, I would start looking that the air compressor pump.
