Open Question

ML 280 will not start with ignition key (no power going to starter) It has a new battery.

All fuses have been checked, new battery fitted in key,all functions operated by key work apart from starting the engine

First of all make sure all your battery connections are Clean and Tight. If they are and all your dash lights come on and its not starting But its cranking over Your anti theft alarm may have gotten activated. You may have to leave your Key in the On position for 20 minutes to reset the alarm. Not cranking just in the on position, Now if its not Cranking and your hearing a clicking sound it may be your starter. I have sometimes tapped on the stater with a deadblow hammer and had someone crank it over Making sure your in park foot on brake and being EXTREMLY Carefull that you are not going to run someone over. Even though I bought the vehicle new, there was an aftermarket security system installed. The system had a bad diode, so i removed the system and reconnected the factory wires.

It could be your neutral safety switch. It could be the starter relay which is located in the fuse panel box. It could be the smaller wire going to the starter could be loose or corroded.

SOURCE: Turn ignition key but won't start..All power on, is it starter?

Can be a Junk Relay, access is limited, but giving the Starter a "crack" with a mallet, often cures the problem temporarily. But check the Battery terminals, and Cable to the Starter solenoid ,first for tightness and security.

SOURCE: My 98 jeep grand cherokee wont start.

fuse 8 40a supplies power to starter relay and ignition switch, to close the starter solenoid and engage the starter which draws directly from the battery. check to see that the starter relay is closing, if not ensure that the park neutral switch is not faulty (open circuit), it provides path to close relay (ground side) on the 85 - 86 terminals. if the starter relay does not close the starter will not run. if you have a spare relay swap out the relay for a quick fix attempt. hope this helps

The starter is malfunction at this time. it could also be a ignition issue as well. here is a quick starter test procedure that will help you troubleshoot a bit.

Step 1
Check for 12 volts on the large wire attached to the top terminal on the starter relay. It should have battery voltage. If not, the battery, terminals or wire is bad.


Step 2
Check the small wire on the solenoid for power when the key is in the start position. Remove the small wire on the solenoid and have a helper hold the key in the start position. Check the wire for battery voltage. If there is voltage, the starter is bad. If there is no voltage, replace the wire.


Step 3
Check the fuse in the fuse box under the hood on the left fender well. If it is good, check the relay by pulling it out and checking for power at one terminal with the key off. If there is no power, the problem is in the fuse box between the fuse and the relay. If there is power, have the helper hold the key in the start position once again and check for power at another terminal from the ignition key. If there is power, the relay is bad. If there is no power, the starter circuit is suspect.


Step 4
Check to see if there is power to the neutral safety switch if there is no power at the relay. Use the voltmeter to check for power with the key in start. If there is power going in, check for power going out. If there is no power going in, the security system or ignition switch is suspect. If there is power going in and none coming out, the switch is bad. If there is power coming out, the problem is between the neutral switch and the relay.

Hi i have a vw bora which doesnt start but has ignition lights, when key is turned lights dont fade and there is no click from starter motor


check connections on starter , the small feed should get power when you turn key to start/crank position, if no power to that check the outputs on the back of the switch /ignition barrel,
if power to starter, then check power to back off starter on large cable (goes direct to battery) if power to both, starter u/s
if power at switch but not at small power feed at starter, relay/fuse fault, or if fitted cut out switch

Starter clicks but doesn't fire engine. Just put in a new battery. Occaisionally, on the 5th or 6th try it starts.

After changing the starter and alternator and installed a new ignition switch my 1997 Nissan p/u started up fine. Drove it around town, stopped, turned off the engine and it started again right away. Drove...


Check and make sure you are getting power to the ignition switch and to the stator wire on the starter. Turn the key on and and measure the volts going to the starter on both wires. You should a atleast 12 volts going to the stator wire and to the main wire from the battery. If you are not getting power there it could be a fuseable link in the power wire from the ignition. I noticed that you replaced the ignition switch make sure the rod from the key switch has not come out of the switch.

You will have to check, at the starter, for power to the SMALL wire on the starter solenoid (which is on the starter) when turning the ignition switch to start.
If there is power to this wire ( usually purple ) and power at the LARGE cable ( from the battery ) at the starter end.....you need a starter.

If you do not have power at the small wire at the solenoid with the key in start position and battery power is OK.....check the safety neutral switch.Moving the shifter around a little can sometimes allow the car to start if the neutral switch is worn.

A new battery does not always mean a fully charged battery.
Try a boost from another car before testing the starter for power.

The battery cables need to be clean and tight....and check the ground to the engine as well.

Everything else may work OK with bad connections,they don't use the power the starter needs to turn the engine over.
