The diagnostic tool connects to the communications networks through the data link connector (DLC). The DLC allows a diagnostic tool access to diagnose and test the vehicle systems of any module on the communications networks.

Do you know what a serial data network is ? With all the computers car makers put on thier cars these day's they need a communication network for them to talk ,share info. on etc. U codes are codes for the network . A module could be down ,could be a wiring problem . A shorted module or bus wire can bring down the whole vehicle. Could cause the vehicle not to start ,systems not to function . How did you pull this code ,with what scan tool or code reader ? Did it come from the PCM - engine computer ? Need a up scale professional scan tool to check all module's on the vehicle , need to pin point the module that is causing the problem .

SECTION 418-00: Module Communications Network 2007 Explorer/Mountaineer/Explorer Sport Trac Workshop Manual DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION Procedure revision date: 08/02/2006 Communications Network Vehicle communication utilizes both medium and high speed controller area network (CAN) communications. CAN is used for many modules to communicate with each other on a common network. CAN in-vehicle networking, is a method for transferring data among distributed electronic modules via a serial data bus. Without serial networking, intermodule communication requires dedicated, point to point wiring resulting in bulky, expensive, complex, and difficult to install wiring harnesses. Applying a serial data network reduces the number of wires combining the signals on a single network. Information is sent to the individual control modules that control each function.
The vehicle has 2 module communication networks:
  • Medium speed (MS) CAN
  • High speed (HS) CAN
Both networks are connected to the data link connector (DLC). This makes diagnosis and testing of these systems easier by allowing one scan tool to be able to diagnose and control any module on both networks from one connector. The DLC can be found under the instrument panel between the steering column and the audio unit.

Network Termination
The CAN network uses a network termination circuit to improve communication reliability. The network termination of the CAN bus takes place inside the termination modules by termination resistors. Termination modules are located at either end of the bus network. As network messages are broadcast in the form of voltage signals, the network voltage signals are stabilized by the termination resistors. Each termination module has a 120 ohm resistor across the positive and negative bus connection in the termination module. With 2 termination modules on each network, and the 120 ohm resistors located in a parallel circuit configuration, the total network impedance, or total resistance is 60 ohms.
Network termination improves bus message reliability by:
  • stabilizing bus voltage.
  • eliminating electrical interference.
Gateway Module
The instrument cluster is the gateway module, translating HS-CAN to MS-CAN and vice versa. This information allows a message to be distributed throughout both networks. The instrument cluster is the only module on this vehicle that has this ability.

My problem is in the gear box (U0103 COMM. SHEFT) the car model 2005 chasis number (1J4GS48KX5C682794) so please what is the problem? Many thanks.


Diagnostic Fault Code (DTC) U0103 is a communications fault.

The Transmission Control Module (TCM) receives information from the Engine, Anti-Lock Brake Systen and the Electronic Gear Shift Control modules over the CAN C bus. (CAN = Cable Area Network)
The CAN C bus is a high speed communications bus that allows real-time control capability between various control modules. Most messages are sent every 20 mSec, this means critical information can be share between multiple modules almost instantaneously. The CAN C bus is a two-wire bus with a CAN (+) and a CAN (-) circuit.
To reduce the potential of radio and other electrical noise interference, the CAN Bus circuit is manufactured using a twisted pair configuration within the wiring harness.
Diagnostic Test Codes (DTCs) with the prefix of "U" are communications faults. The types of DTCs indicate that one or more of the modules within the CAN network is not communicating properly with the rest of the modules.
For this vehicle, DTC P0103 indicates that the Transmission Shift Module is having difficulty communicating on the CAN network.
The network connections as well as power and ground circuits to the Transmission Shift Module must be verified for proper operation. This includes accessing the network with a scan tool that has the capability of two-way communications with all of the modules on the CAN network.
Please note that MOST generic OBD code readers do not have this capability.

P0344 = cam position sensor error
P0603 = Internal control module keep alive memory error.
P1670 = communication error between PCM and IDM
P0562 = system voltage low

My guess is you probably have some wiring issues but it's hard to tell exactly where.

I have a ford explore 4wd v-6 engine. i had a diagnostic test done and the codes are U1900, B2900 and U2023. The mechanic didn't tell me what they meant. Told me I need to replace my battery for $200.00,...


U1900 - is a continuous code = C.A.N. communication bus fault - receive error

B2900 - can't find

U2023 - can't find

none of these are powertrain codes. if you have no symptoms, clear codes and drive car. I think you can clear by disconnecting battery for 2 hours. then drive for 10 miles to relearn. may run rough for 10 miles.

What does C1175,C1236 and U1900 mean?

For
C1175 - Speed Wheel Sensor LR Input Circuit Failure C1236 - Speed Wheel LR Input Signal Missing U1900 - Communication bus fault
If the cluster is working fine, ignore U1900.
There are so many recalls and so many technical bulletin for the problems on Ford 350.
