You turn the key to the run position. Under the steering column by the key you will see a small hole. You have to use that hole to reach the release pin on the column. Push pin and pull out cylinder and key.

It is not necessary to have the dealer do this, think of the cash! Though it does require patience and time. The pin you are supposed to push in goes into a slot when you have it in run position, since you cannot turn it to run you have to make a slot for the pin to go into, with a drill. Be very careful as you only have a 1/4" of play before you break a washer behind the cylinder. Once you have drilled out the key far enough to the pin hole you can take a nail set and tap the pin up, you can tell when the pin clears the housing, then it just takes wiggle, patience and tinkering to get the cylinder to slide out, keep the green washer and the metal slot washer. Metal slot washer goes in first with green plastic washer ontop of that with lock cylinder in last. You can play around with the new lock cylinder and washer before insertion to determin correct direction.

Here are official directions with inoperable lock cylinder. They say drill out retaining pin but it just spun in circles for me - I looked at new cylinder and saw how it worked. retaining pin needs a place to go.
Removal & Installation (Non-Functional)
NOTE:Use this procedure to remove ignition lock cylinder if key is missing or cylinder is frozen.

Disconnect negative battery cable. Disable air bag system. See appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article in RESTRAINTS. Wait at least one minute for air bag back-up power supply to deplete. Remove steering wheel. See STEERING WHEEL . Using a 1/8" bit, drill out retaining pin located below lock cylinder on housing. DO NOT drill deeper than 1/2".
Using channel lock pliers, twist lock cylinder cap until it separates from lock cylinder. Using a 3/8" drill bit, drill down center of ignition lock key slot about 1 3/4" until lock cylinder breaks loose from its base.
Remove retainer, washer, and lock cylinder gear from housing. Remove metal shavings from lock cylinder bore. Replace housing if damaged. To install, reverse removal procedure. Connect negative battery cable. Check air bag system for proper system operation. See appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article in RESTRAINTS.

hard! there is a hole on the steering column near the lock cylinder. normally you can turn the key and stick a small screw driver in it to pull out the lock cylinder. in this case you can drill the pin through that hole then pull it out

There is a nut or screw on the back of the lock cylinder, unscrew it, but have your key in the front of the cylinder first so it doesn't fall apart on you. Then turn the key one way or the other and it will come out, make the wafers are where you can see them as you pull the key out. Good Luck

Hi there. my friend is stuck on the road and she can put the key into the ignition but cant turn it, the steering wheel is locked. she has tried everything... whats goin on? 2000 ford focus

Very common issue for this model. She needs to buy a buildable ignition from the dealer and get the key code with her vin # so she can make it match her anti theft key, then the ignition lock cylinder needs to be drilled out to remove it.

Remove panel under steering wheel. Put key in cylinder and turn back to accessory position. Looking under lower part of steering column locate a small pin under the key cylinder. While depressing the pin turn the key backwards and pull the entire cylinder with key out of column. Good luck.

Need instructions on how to remove the door interior panel on a ford e150 to service/replace the door lock solenoid. The door lock intermittently fails to respond.

Look for the phlips head screws in arm pad area and around panel. Once removed you can pry off panel but be carefull not to break plastic clips if you do no sweat they are cheap to replace.

2000 contour

for 98 contour issue. TSB 98-21-14 not covered by warranty

This TSB article is being republished in its entirety to include the 1999 Cougar . ISSUE: The ignition key may be difficult to insert or remove and/or key chimes may sound with the ignition key removed and driver's door open on some vehicles. This may be caused by internal design characteristics in the ignition lock cylinder increasing insertion/removal efforts which may allow the lock cylinder to stick.
ACTION: Install a revised ignition lock cylinder. The revised ignition lock cylinder should reduce the possibility of high insertion/removal efforts and ensure proper chime function. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
  1. Verify customer concern.
  2. Observe the ignition lock cylinder as the key is removed. If the lock cylinder snaps outward to the non-depressed position and the chimes stop sounding, continue to Step 3. If it does not snap outward, replace the ignition lock cylinder with the appropriate cylinder by referring to the Parts Block in this article.
  3. Insert and remove the ignition key from the lock cylinder. If binding or high efforts are encountered, replace the ignition lock cylinder.
  4. From the Parts Block, select a lock cylinder with a part number suffix identical to the center character of the key code of the vehicle. The suffix must match the center key code character to maintain a single key system.
  5. Install the replacement lock cylinder, by referring to the 1998 Contour/Mystique Workshop Manual, Section 211-05 or the 1999 Cougar Workshop Manual, Section 211-04. NOTE: KEYS INCLUDED WITH NEW IGNITION LOCK CYLINDERS ARE CUT FOR THE IGNITION ONLY. IN ORDER FOR THE KEYS TO FUNCTION IN THE DOOR LOCKS, THE KEYS MUST BE CUT TO THE DOOR CODE OF THE ORIGINAL LOCKSET. THE KEY CODE WILL CHANGE UPON INSTALLATION OF THE REPLACEMENT LOCK CYLINDER (FIGURE 1).

    tw2114~us~en~file=tb5525a.gif~gen~ref.gif
    Figure 1 - Article 98-21-14

NOTE: ADVISE THE CUSTOMER TO DISCARD ALL KEYS THAT WERE CUT TO THE ORIGINAL IGNITION LOCK CYLINDER.
  6. Record the new key code on the repair order and provide to the customer. Advise the customer to record the new key code in a permanent location and to discard all references to the original key code. NOTE: REPLACEMENT IGNITION LOCK CYLINDERS ARE SHIPPED WITH NON-PASSIVE ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM (PATS) KEYS. IF THE VEHICLE IS EQUIPPED WITH PATS, OBTAIN TWO (2) ROTUNDA KEY BLANKS (OR OTHER FORD AUTHORIZED BLANKS, SUCH AS: ILCO, STRATTEC, CURTIS, HUF, OR VALEO) AND CUT TO THE REVISED KEY CODE. USE OF OTHER UNAUTHORIZED KEYS MAY CAUSE ERRATIC OPERATION OF THE PATS SYSTEM.
  7. Program PATS keys using one of the two following methods:
(1) For vehicles with Integrated PATS (IPATS), function built into the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) and built beginning:
  • 2/2/98 Kansas City (Contour/Mystique)
  • 2/16/98 Mexico (Contour/Mystique)
  • All 1999 Cougars
Using the New Generation Star (NGS) Tester equipped with Service card (green) level 3.0 or higher:
  1. From NGS menu, select:
    • Service Bay Functions
    • PCM
    • Enter Security Access (10 minute delay)
    • Ignition Key-Code-Erase
  2. Disconnect Data Link Connector (DLC).
  3. Cycle the first non-programmed key in the ignition to run position for at least 3 seconds and then turn to the off position.
  4. Cycle the second non-programmed key in the ignition to run position. The theft indicator should prove out for 3 seconds.
  5. Verify the vehicle will now start using both keys.
(2) For Contours/Mystiques with Stand Alone PATS and built before:
  • 2/2/98 Kansas City
  • 2/16/98 Mexico
Using the New Generation Star (NGS) Tester equipped with Service card (green) level 1.0 or higher:
  1. From NGS menu, select:
    • Service Bay Functions
    • PATS
    • Ignition Key-Code-Erase (this process may take up to 8 minutes to complete )
  2. Disconnect DLC.
  3. Cycle first unprogrammed key in the ignition to run position. First key will program and allow vehicle to start.
  4. Again cycle first programmed key to run position. Within 15 seconds, remove original key and turn new unprogrammed key to run position. The theft indicator should prove out for 2 seconds. New key will start vehicle.
  5. Repeat this process for additional key programming. NOTE: THE FOLLOWING SHOULD BE NOTED FOR THE PART NUMBER BLOCK:
    • Part Number suffix will match center character in key code
    • Logo on key is Ford for Contour models
    • Logo on key is Mercury for Mystique and Cougar models

PART NUMBER PART NAME F5RZ-11582-A Ignition Lock Cylinder (Contour) F5RZ-11582-B Ignition Lock Cylinder (Contour) F5RZ-11582-C Ignition Lock Cylinder (Contour) F5RZ-11582-D Ignition Lock Cylinder (Contour) F5RZ-11582-E Ignition Lock Cylinder (Contour) F5RY-11582-A Ignition Lock Cylinder (Mystique, Cougar) F5RY-11582-B Ignition Lock Cylinder (Mystique, Cougar) F5RY-11582-C Ignition Lock Cylinder (Mystique, Cougar) F5RY-11582-D Ignition Lock Cylinder (Mystique, Cougar) F5RY-11582-E Ignition Lock Cylinder (Mystique, Cougar)

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

Functional Lock

The following procedure applies to vehicles that have functional lock cylinders. Such cylinders either have a key available or known key numbers from which a key can be made.
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Turn the lock cylinder key to the RUN position.
  3. Using a 1/8 in. (3mm) diameter wire pin or a small drift, depress the lock cylinder retaining pin through the access hole in the upper steering column shroud (under the ignition lock cylinder) while pulling out on the lock cylinder. Remove the lock cylinder from the column.

Using the key, turn the ignition lock cylinder to the RUN position, then depress the retaining pin using a wire pin or small drift

To install:
  1. Install the lock cylinder by turning it to the RUN position and depressing the retaining pin. Insert the lock cylinder into its housing. Make sure the cylinder is fully seated and aligned in the interlocking washer before turning the key to the OFF position. This will permit the cylinder retaining pin to extend into the cylinder housing.
  2. Rotate the lock cylinder using the lock cylinder key, to ensure correct mechanical operation in all positions.
  3. Connect the negative battery cable.

Non-Functional Lock
The following procedure applies to vehicles in which the ignition lock is inoperative and the lock cylinder cannot be rotated due to a lost or broken key, unknown key number or a lock cylinder cap that has been damaged and/or broken to the extent that the lock cylinder cannot be rotated.

My key will not turn in my 2000 ford focus has anyone had this problem and not had to replace ignition

Will the key go in and out of the ignition? If you can take the key from the ignition, I would use WD40 and lubricate the ignition lock until it is almost overly lubricated and take the key and push it in the lock and tap the end of the key into the lock with a hammer (remember, I said TAP). These things might get your car ignition to work long enough to get your car ignition into the ON position. at that point removal of the ignition cylinder is very easy. if you can't get the key to turn go to this page to see about drilling out the lock so it will turn. http://www.autosafety.org/2000-2005-ford-focus-ignition-lock-cylinder.

Go to this website and get in contact with Tousley Ford. They have great prices on ford parts if you are in the USA.
http://forums.focaljet.com/tousley-ford/

I just changed out the ignition cylinder in my 2002 Focus and it was a five minute job because I could get the old cylinder in the ON position and didn't have to drill it out. and Tousley ford did me great on the price!
Good luck.
