Heater will not blow hot air

The water inlet valve may not be letting water in, the heater core and hoses may be plugged or the engine thermostat may be stuck open. These are the things to check under the hood. The mix door may be letting cold air inside to mix with hot air from the heater.

I have a dodge grand caravan 2006 with trouble codes p0126 and p0406 what does that mean? and how can I fix it?

Hi, sorry I don't have a manual for your van but here is some general information for these codes.

P0126 Insufficient Coolant Temperature for Stable Operation:

basically, the engine is running cool. Check your thermostat to see if it's closing properly. If it is closed when removed, you may want to get a higher temp thermostat. The thermostat is usually in a housing bolted to the engine at the end of the upper radiator hose.

P0406 Exhaust Gas Recirculation Sensor A Circuit High:

This indicates the EGR position sensor signal is out of range. The problem could be the wiring or the sensor itself. Check the wiring first. If it looks good, consider replacing the sensor. I think in your van the sensor may be integrated into the EGR valve itself.

I took my 2000 camry to auto zone the check engine light came on they said it showed the engine is too cool what does that mean?

From the limited information you gave it sounds like your thermostat is stuck open.
The thermostat is a temperature operated valve that stops the coolant from flowing through the radiator until the engine warms up. I simple test is to drive for 5 minutes and then check the heater output. The temperature of the air from the heat vents is related to the coolant temperature in the engine. If the air from the vents is only slightly warm with the heater set on HIGH then change your thermostat.
Changing the thermostat on a 4 cylinder Camry is a fairly basic DIY job. Your friends at Autozone can fix you up with the parts (don't forget the gasket). You'll need to (partially) drain the radiator in the process. Probably a good time to change it. You can buy pre-mixed or get a gallon of "pure" and a gallon of distilled water from the grocery store and mix your own.

I am helping change a thermostat - (we have no manual) where exactly is the thermostat located. This is a 4 cyl, standard trans, 2WD, speedo stopped working at 225K. Heater went out about 6 months ago, AC...

The thermostat cannot cause your heater to go out, though the heater will run a little cooler if the thermostat is stuck open. Please see my tip at http://www.fixya.com/cars/r6235876-no_heat_fan_blowing_cold_air to troubleshoot the heater. In particular, I would start by checking the temperature control cable adjustments. I have pasted instructions from autozone.com below.

If you really want to change the thermostat, please see my tip at http://www.fixya.com/cars/r5929960-s_thermostat . The thermostat is in the housing at the end of the upper radiator hose.

For the speedo, It's probably a broken cable. Have someone take the cable off the tranny and spin the cable in their fingers while you watch the speedo. If the speedo works, the problem is with the gear in the tranny, else the cable is broke.

Let me know if you have more questions along your journey. :o)

Heater temperature control cables to blend door and heater water valve--adjustment:
WATER VALVE CONTROL ROD

See Figure 8
When adjusting the water valve control rod, disconnect the temperature control cable at the air mix door lever and then adjust air mix door control cable. Next, adjust the control rod. Reconnect the temperature control cable and then readjust it.
  1. Push the air mix door lever in the correct direction.
  2. Pull the control rod in the direction shown (in the accompanying illustration) until there is an 0.08 in. (2mm) clearance between the ends of the rod and link lever. Connect the rod to the door lever.

TEMPERATURE CONTROL CABLE
See Figure 9
Move the temperature control lever to the cold position. Push the cable sheathing and the air mix door lever in the correct and then tighten the clamp. Verify proper operation.

89 740 volvo GL heater failure

Several suggestions:
  • Your thermostat needs replacement and your dash gauge is not reading correctly. Cheap and easy to put in a new thermostat to confirm.
  • Your heater core has a deposit of sediment or minerals restricting the flow of warm coolant in which case the system may benefit from a backflush.
  • The heater water valve has a blockage restricting flow and may be in need of replacement;
  • You have a vacuum leak which causes the heat vent control to work improperly;
  • Your firewall-side heater water valve was installed backwards; The arrow on the valve points to towards the firewall inlet, not back towards the engine.
  • Control cables from the heater control unit to air mixing doors are maladjusted or broken. In heater-only cars (no AC unit), the water valve (which is inside the cabin, above the left footwell) is controlled by a cable from the air mixing door.
  • Check the heater hoses, I have seen several 700's where they are swapped over and it results in ZERO heat. See the section on Water Valve Replacement for correct installation instructions.

Where is the HVAC box located on a 2000 GMC Sierra 4X4. I beleive the mixing door is not working correctly, I'm only getting warm air not hot. All ready changed thermostat and checked hoses.

Check in the one heater hose will be a control valve. Check the operation of the valve(this is the heater control valve). If the lever on it appears to be moving. Take the valve out and manually check that the valve is opening and closing the whole way. If not replace the valve and recheck. If it is the heater core may be clogged not allowing the hot coolant to flow thru so you can get heat.
