you are correct - its called a heater control module,mounted on heater case under dash - i believe it is only available at dealers,but i could be wrong

i am not a mechanic but an alternator should have nothing to do with smog it is the exhaust system not the eletrical system hope this clarifies things regards Jim

fan sensor is usually part of the coolant temp sensor, and is normally available from most parts stores. It works like this: sensor sends signal to the computer. Computer sends signal to the fan relay which in turn sends signal to the fan. You can check the fan by hot wiring it directly to the battery if it comes on then it's OK. If no signal is going to the fan, then relay is suspect (location varies...sometimes in front of the battery, sometimes in power distribution center...signal from computer is a ground, not voltage. signal to fan is voltage.Signal from sensor to gauge and computer is variable low voltage that can be tested. If fan and relay are good then the problem is either sensor or the computer, or wiring in between all.
My answer is likely info overload, but if you understand the basics, you can figure it out.
