09 honda civic digital speedometer displays wrong speed

Today I noticed that my speedometer is malfunctioning; it's speeding up really fast, skipping numbers, and telling me I'm going 80 MPH when I'm only going about I slow down, same thing, speed jumps around and shows much higher numbers than I'm actually going. Seems to work ok when I'm driving about 15mph around a parking lot, but as soon as I hit the gas at all, it thinks I'm going 50mph out of the parking lot! What are the possible causes for this, and how much am I looking at if I need to replace the sensor? Would this be covered by the general factory warranty?

SOURCE: Where is the speed sensor located on a 1991 Nissan

the speed sensor is on the the tail housing of the transmission, located by the firewall straight down from the back of the engine, it is a round looking sensor on the top of the housing has a 2 wire plug with about a 8 in. lead, but it may not be the problem, I have one also that I think is the speedo itself, this sensor sends the signal right to the speedo and then the speedo have a processor that sends the signal to the ecm.

Possible speed sensor. I know the speed sensors are a problem with hondas. A new speed sensor is about $200 and can be easily replaced. It bolts to the top of the transmission on the firewall side. Do NOT buy an e-bay one. They are only about $30 but are junk

Where would i find the speedmeter cable in a 1994 honda civic

If your 94 is the same as my 96, there is no speedometer cable. The Instrument cluster is all electronic and I believe the speedometer gets the speed from the computer via the vehicle speed sensor.

92 Honda Civic DX-hatch back, 1.5L Speedometer is acting like a tach while driving at highway speeds. Sometimes it will zero out and then it will peg. This is while maintaining a constant speed.

I believe that in '91 or '92 Honda switched from an analog (cable-driven) speedometer to a digital (sending unit/electronic head) version. Likely problem is the sending unit attached to the transmission. Try this website for a replacement and an image of the sending unit:

Good luck.

98 honda civic speedometer not working. it will jump around and then settle at 20.

It's a common problem with the civic's, the speedo is bad, you can try findind one in the bone yard but it may be bad to, the dealer is expensive, In my 95 civic I turn on my tom tom and it has the speed on it, all the other gauges work fine, the odometer will work fine, just the speedo.

My speedometer is not working. we already try to replace a new sensor and panel gauge but still is not working. Electerical was also checked and there were instances my speedometer works but suddenly it...

if speedometer and odometer are not working, chances are that the speed sensor is bad and stopped working. find vehicle speed sensor on transmission, the connection may be corroded or the sensor itself is bad. good-day !!
