Question about Honda Civic
Today I noticed that my speedometer is malfunctioning; it's speeding up really fast, skipping numbers, and telling me I'm going 80 MPH when I'm only going about 50...as I slow down, same thing, speed jumps around and shows much higher numbers than I'm actually going. Seems to work ok when I'm driving about 15mph around a parking lot, but as soon as I hit the gas at all, it thinks I'm going 50mph out of the parking lot! What are the possible causes for this, and how much am I looking at if I need to replace the sensor? Would this be covered by the general factory warranty?

the speed sensor is on the the tail housing of the transmission, located by the firewall straight down from the back of the engine, it is a round looking sensor on the top of the housing has a 2 wire plug with about a 8 in. lead, but it may not be the problem, I have one also that I think is the speedo itself, this sensor sends the signal right to the speedo and then the speedo have a processor that sends the signal to the ecm.

Possible speed sensor. I know the speed sensors are a problem with hondas. A new speed sensor is about $200 and can be easily replaced. It bolts to the top of the transmission on the firewall side. Do NOT buy an e-bay one. They are only about $30 but are junk

Its a loose connection on the speedo cable. its a b*tch to get to. I had the same problem on my truck, it would fluctuate in 5th gear on the highway. i spent the money and had a professional do it.
