The Info I Have Is Extensive and Has Illistrations, I Need to Emali it to You As it is Very Large, This Is A Small Example Im @rejakwilson@aol.com

Special Tool(s)

  1. With the vehicle in neutral, position it on a hoist.
  2. Remove the intake manifold.
  3. Remove the fuel supply manifold.
  4. Remove the accessory drive belt.
  5. Remove the thermostat housing.
  6. Remove the roller followers.
  7. NOTE: You must retime the LH and RH camshafts when either camshaft is disturbed. Turn the crankshaft clockwise to position the number one cylinder at top dead center (TDC).

SOURCE: how hard is it to replace timing chain on ford

There are 2 different 4.0L type engines on Ford Explorers if it is the VIN letter E (8th number reading left to right) then yes it has a timing chain on the back and there are 3 timing chains on the front. You will need special tools to hold the timing in place whille you change the chains. You can buy them from several different tool manufacturers. I bought mine from Snap-on but it was several hundred dollars and came with many different adapters for several different engines. But be prepared to spend a little money they aren't cheap even the small sets. Depending upon how much you'll use them you may want to see how much it would cost to have it done or try to find someone to loan you some. If you do then it's just a matter of following the procedure in the maintenance manual. As far as how hard is it? It isn't rocket science but I would make sure you read over the procedure in a repair manual, see if you can get the special tools you will need and depending upon your mechanical aptitude determine if it's something you want to tackle yourself. Good luck.

Where is the timing chain tensioner located on a 4.0 SOHC, 1998 Ford Explorer 2 door

The tensioner is located at the rear (right side) of motor. Jack the car up, remove right front wheel, remove the splash guard. Looking up, above the exhaust manifold near rear of motor you'll see a BLACK 25mm or 27mm bolt head....That's the tensioner.

How to change a timing chain tensioner on 2002 ford explorer

Pull your Serpentine belt, remove the Cam Belt Cover, (it may be advantageous to remove front wheel in the Cam Belt side) Remove the timing belt and time the engine to specifications, make sure you are on #1TDC, remove the tensioner and replace. if there is and Idler pulley replace that as well. You can use Spray Carb Cleaner to clean the pulleys before replacing the belt. Note, you may have to also remove the Harmonic Balancer and pulleys from the crankshaft.

97 ford exporer timing issue

There are three engines used in a 97 model. The 4.0 single overhead cam V6 engine uses a timing chain in the front and in the rear, one for each cam. The left side is in the front and the right side is in the back. You would have to take the engine out to access the rear chain.
The 4.0 overhead valve engine and the V8 engine only have one chain in the front.

I have a Ford Explorer 1999. I have been told timing chain gards need replacing which are plastic. The motor need to come out to do front and back at $7,000 AUS.

Yes Ford Explorers are like that, The timing chain tensioners are plastic and need replaced with the chains. The engine has to be removed, please replace all chains and related parts at this time. This will save you money and downtime later. There are multiple chains on these Fords.

not true. SOHC 4.0 tensioner and rails fall apart, allowing the chain to slap and do damage, or even break. book it. in order to replace rioght side cam chain and tensioner, the engine MUST BE REMOVED! if it has balance shaft chain in oil pan, there are a total of four chains in this engine.

01 ford explorer sport trac rear timing chain diagram

There is a detailed explanation in the ford workshop manual for this, and some special tools are required to get the timing right. I would not recommend doing this without the special tools. Contact your local ford dealer, they might loan you the tools and the manual for a fee.
Hope this helps, Mark
