Question about Mitsubishi Cars & Trucks

Open Question

I have a 1999 Mitsubishi Nimbus, manual ******. Just recently had clutch replaced among a heap of other work, but have a loud rattling type whine which I have been told is coming from the diff (fwd).

Work carried out: steering components ie: bushes, rubbers etc front and back, clutch replacement, oil leaks repaired for tappet cover, rocket cover, and main oil seal, timing belts replaced, harmonic balancer replaced,CV shafts have just been rebuilt and other bits and pieces. Before clutch was replaced there were issues developing with transmission ie: not engaging in gear properly usually when changing up from 2nd to 3rd.

SOURCE: harmonic balancer rubbing on the timing chain cover

The rubber in the balancer has broken down and the inner and outer pieces shift and rub on the cover. You need a new balancer.

SOURCE: 2000 Mitsubishi Galant, EA3A 2.4l motor. Oil leal

don't use 20w50 that is too heavy an oil for that motor. the most i would use is like a 10w40 and that is a last resort. your valves need adjusting or the hydraulic lash adjusters may be gunked up. there is a chemical called auto-rx (search web) that could help you out. just follow the directions for it. the only other oil seals i can think of are oil pan gasket, oil filter gasket, rear main seal, valve cover gasket.

Sounds like a bad countershaft bearing. The trans will need removed and disassembled to fix it.

A damaged or defective HARMONIC BALANCER is a likely culprit, especially if you have recently had engine work done.

I have an 02 Ford Fiesta. Rattling soun when clutch is depressed.

Unfortunately, you can't really tell until you have the parts in front of you. If the clutch showed no signs of slipping in any gear, then the disk and pressure plate are probably ok. Throwout bearing troubles are usually heard as a sort of screech when the pedal is depressed. If the pressure plate is the type that has 3 fingers that are pushed by the bearing and one of the fingers was bent/broken, it would make a rattling sound. If the car has considerable miles, it might be worthwhile to replace the whole assembly even though the clutch itself seems to working well. Hope this helps!

Manual Transmission rattling and rough driving.

If the truck was ran low on fluid to the point it clangs and bangs, the internal damage is done.
The best you can hope for is burnt bearings and hopefully the shafts are not scored. Disassembly is the only solution. Or a used transmission.

is your ac compressor located on the left side as well and also try your ac if its not blowing to cold the rattling could be your ac clutch on the compressor if that is you will have to get a new clutch kit from your local auto parts store to fix it

Timing belt on a Mitsubishi Nimbus 1994

Make sure you mark cam and crankshaft pulleys with at least two marks on each one.
Also put marks on engine to keep them all lined up.
I use either tippex correction fluid or white paint.

Whining

hi these boxes tended to be a bit noisey anyway but a simple test for the release bearing and first motion shaft is easy first make sure g/box oil level is ok
start engine ,take your foot off the clutch peddle compleatly you have a whine, put your foot on the peddleVERYlightlynoise should change ,if the noise is more of a rattle than a whine it is coming from the clutch release bearing if it a definate whine it is either the spigot bearing in the flywheel or the first motion shaft
