Should run from your throttle body or carburator.

Check engine light usually has to do with a smog problem, It could be major (not likely) or very minor, like a stuck PCV valve. You need to take the car to someone with a vehical code computer. The reason the light its self comes on is becouse a sensor in the car is telling the computer somthing is not working right. Half the time it has happend to me, I just clear the code, or codes, that turns the light off and I just keep driving the thing. But it is a very good idea to at least find out what it is first. I hope this helps.

SOURCE: 2000 Honda Accord EGR Valve Error P0401

Jason,
-after you change the part you have to reset/clear the code

-this can be done by either:
(1) using the OBD2 code reader that Autozone used OR since option 2 (below) is very quick
(2) disconnecting the battery for about 30 seconds (this will delete all codes/radio presets/etc) but it will also clear the 'check engine' code
-this is what I do AFTER i write down my radio station presets :)

-hopefully the new EGR valve resolves your issue after you CLEAR the code
...but that code just means a an insufficient amount of Exhaust Gas recirculation (pressure difference) used to keep the emissions in check
-if it comes back, then there are a few other fixes to try also

-let me know if you need further assistance
-please remember to rate me `fix-ya`if it works
thanks

SOURCE: Service engine code indicates EGR valve.

You could have a restriction in the egr ports. remove the valve. Plug the holes, start engine. 1 hole will be blowing out exhaust, the other will have large vacuum.

SOURCE: Check engine light on due to issue with EGR valve

You need to reset the cars cpu,..you can do this by unhooking the negative side of the battery for about 10 minuts,then if the light comes on again,run the obd2 reader again,because there is another problem.

SOURCE: EGR Sensor/valve replacement

The EGR is a three part series; the valve, soleniod, and sensor. They are fairly easy to change, a few hours with a buddy. They are located on the top back, center of the engine. Take a look you will see something that is small and cylinder like with a wire connected to the top, that is the vavle. I would replace all three at once as they are all together and you have to take of one to take of the others. The total price will cost you about $250 in parts. However, you must know your engine type on the Sable/Tarus as the parts are different per engine.

SOURCE: how to clean/check the egr valve

When the EGR VALVE is clogged or malfunctioning, it can cause irregularities in engine performance such as rough idling or valve knock, indicating that the EGR valve should be inspected.
The EGR valve works by routing a small amount of exhaust back into the combustion chamber. When the temperature in the combustion chamber is too high, nitrogen oxides are produced, which combine with elements in the atmosphere to form smog. Introducing a small amount of exhaust into the system reduces the temperature in the combustion chamber, reducing the amount of nitrogen oxides produced.

Many EGR valves are mechanical, and simply have a small valve which opens to allow exhaust into the combustion chamber and closes when it is not necessary, and to keep the air mixture optimal for combustion. Some mechanical versions will not open until there is sufficient back pressure, ensuring that the valve will not be open when the engine is idle or warming up and needs a higher concentration of oxigen for combustion. Electronic EGR valves are also available, and use electronics to regulate the valve.

If the EGR valve is stuck open, it will essentially cause a vacuum leak, leading to inefficient combustion, rough idling, hesitation, and sometimes stalling in extreme cases. This is because the car cannot combust on carbon dioxide from the tailpipe — it needs atmospheric oxygen. If the combustion chamber is flooded with exhaust from an open EGR valve, it will not function properly. To check and see if the EGR valve is stuck open, have someone idle a parked vehicle with the brake on while you examine the plunger shaft to see if it is stuck open.
If the EGR valve is stuck closed, emissions of nitrogen oxides will rise, and the car may start to knock. Spark knock happens when the fuel mixture in the combustion chamber ignites before it has been reached by the explosion in the cylinder, resulting in a disruption of the engine timing. In this instance, the engine should be warmed up and revved to see if the EGR valve will move.

In both cases, simple repairs are possible. The EGR valve can be clogged, and a simple cleaning of a mechanical EGR valve may solve the problem. In the case of an electrically controlled EGR valve or a more complex mechanical problem, replacement of the valve may be needed. The EGR valve is an expensive motor vehicle component, and care should be taken to ensure that it needs to be replaced rather than repaired. A reputable mechanic should advise you appropriately.

Failure to repair or replace the EGR valve will not lead to a life threatening condition, although it will reduce the life of your car and increase the potential emissions. Especially in areas which require smog testing, an automobile with a malfunctioning EGR valve may not pass

Check your Back pressure valve. The hose on the top of the EGR runs to the backpressure valve loated on the firewall of your car. Also check the mass air flow sensor. There are plenty of times when the EGR code pops up that something else is wrong with that system

What are the symptoms of a bad erg valve and where is it located on a 1999 dodge duranlgo

it is located at the rear of the engine behind the intake, the most common symptom on this is just a rough idle or in most cases a check engine light that stays on, no matter what is wrong with the valve it will set a fault code and turn the check engine light on, so unless the light is on the problem is not the EGR

Im having ERG problems. Vaccum leak somewhere. Check engine light came on. check all around the engine for hoses off. could not find any.

Check for

vacuum leaks on intake manifold,

the air tube between the air filter.

intake manifold vacuum hose.

===
clean throttle plate with Berryman carburator cleaner

SEE sample picture HERE
===

Also remove carbon built up behind the EGR valve and the EGR passage tube.

===

Vacuum leak WILL offset the intended 14.7 to 1 air fuel ratio.

More un-metered air (leaks) will lean out the fuel mixture.

Use small amount of Berryman carb clearer at potential air leak area will help you identify trouble spot.

At idle,just spray and listen for the RPM surge.

The in-rush of carb clearer will increase the RPM on the motor.

Record the problem spot(s) and address it later.

===

EGR carbon built up require 2+ hours to clean from start to finish.

You will need a new EGR base gasket before your start.

Locate and remove the EGR valve after the vehicle is cool down.

Carefully record the connector and vacuum line (for older vehicle) location by drawing an easily to follow diagram.

Remove the EGR valve.

Inspect the location of the carbon built-up inside the valve and the EGR passage tube.

SOAK these areas with WD-40 spary.

You will need a small screwdriver,cloth hanger and lot of newspaper and time to get this cleaning done right.

RE-SOAK the carbon and let it sit for over-night will also help.

One the last round,pass a shop vacuum of the EGR valve and the passage pipe.

Install the new EGR gasket and connectors.

Allow the vehicle to warm up outdoor to burn up any remaining WD-40.

Take it for a test drive.

its easy too replace but you need too reset your cmputer first too see if the light stays out before you go and buy the egr valve
disconnect the pos side of the battery for 5 min that will reset the computer,if the light comes back on then get the egr valve then you will have too reset it again

Rough idle only when engine is cold

check to see if the vehicle has EGR valve most of them are either elecrtronic or vacum controlled disconnect it and start it check and see if this smoothes out cause it sounds like the valve is staying open while the engine is cold if thsi solves the problem replace the valve.

secondly take a small screw driver aor a tiny hammer and tap the valve while the engine is running if it smoothes out replace the valve the valve is carbon filled and needs to be changed .

The EGR valve is located on the intake manifold, it has a single vacuum line going to it, are you sure it is the valve and not the vacuum control valve that opens and closes the EGR? You provided no year or trouble code, so hope this answer is correct.
