Question about 1997 Mercury Grand Marquis

1 Answer

97 Grand Marquis Erratic Temp

Lately my 97 Marquis has been having some problems with erratic temperature. Usually if I let it run for about 15 minutes before driving it works fine, but occasionally not. What happens is this:

While driving, the heat begins to blow cold. The temperature gauge begins to climb and after about 30 seconds the hot air will kick back in. The temperature gauge then levels off to normal levels. When stopped in drive, the gauge will drop a little below normal and go back up when I start driving again.

Hoping this isn't too expensive of a problem, and any help you can give would be much appreciated.

(1) clean the throttle assembly. They are very sensitive to build up also and they are very cheap change out the throttle body sensor. The TBS allows are to by pass both of these will cause erratic ideal. The mass air flow will not cause erratic idle but your car will be very loud and run rough. Failing this (cheap fix) I would suggest to look at the ignition coils.

1994 Mercury Grand Marquis temp gauge reads hot

Check sending unit, Ford/Mercury put out a TSB, technical service bulletin : Article No. 95-13-2 07/03/95, on erratic temp sender units.
You troubleshoot as follows :
  1. Turn ignition switch to On or ACC position.
  2. Connect a 10 ohm resistor between gauge lead and ground. The centerline of pointer should fall within the band around the H mark.
  3. Connect a 73 ohm resistor between gauge lead and ground. The centerline of pointer should fall within the band around the C mark.
  4. If gauge tests within calibration, replace sender.
  5. If gauge is out of calibration, replace gauge.

Guages not working,

If all voltages checked ok,then most probably its faulty instrument cluster board on which gauges are connected.Yes if cluster circuit board looks ok,then also it can be faulty.Somewhere there is minute short or burn on board then such prolem arises.
Also check the fuse box.One under hood and other under dash.Inspect each and every fuse and see if all are fine or not.
