SOURCE: 2003 VW Jetta Charging problem

problem is that the voltage regulators on the 1.8t which I am sure is the same on the TDI that they may work fine when they are cold....but once they warm up is when they start acting up and causing problems. I assume is has to do with some resistor over heating. This is just a common problem noticed by most people over at
So you can take your alternator to get tested but if it is tested cold then well it may appear to be working ok. When in reality it is broken. Trust is a cheap enough part and easy enough to fix to not just try it. Some can even change the regulator without taking the alternator out. If you have small enough hands I can see it being done.

Either you have a broken wire some where from the speed sensor to the cluster or you have connector at fault, the one which hookup the dash cluster to the main wire bundel. Check the connector, maybe a pushed back pin !!

If you have the end of the cable, and the handle just broke, grab the cable with a pair of Vise Grips or something and pull it. If the cable broke off, you will have to try to get it from either under the car, or try to do it through the grille at the latch mechanism (we had to do that for my aunts cadillac once)

My car

to truly eliminate the alternator you have to disconnect from the wires over night to see if battery is still drained good chance that alternator is the also can put a test light in between the battery and the ground cable (negative)as you disconnect the alternator you should see a difference in the test light. the bulb will dim down if alternator is draining the power.

I have a 1996 VW Passat Estate 1.9TD the battery goes flat after a day or 2 running. With a fully charged battery in it it shows 12.5volts when ticking over.when a go to start the carthe dash lighs come on...

A fully charged battery should read approx 12.6 volts. When you check the voltage of a running vehicle, it should read approx 14.5 volts or so. If it doesn't, you are not going to charge. You are most likely driving around with a junk alternator, and if it has a bad regulator, it will discharge your battery. Most auto shops will test alternators for free!

94 yj will not crank over but I have a clicking sound, checked batt. and all leads, fuses look good, if I push start yj it will run great.. I installed a new starter and it will only click, will not crank.

It appears you have a poor battery cable ground connection. Remove the cable from the baterry ans lean the bat connection thoroughly. If this is a side post, put a ble in the terminal threads and see if the terminal is loose. If it is, The terminal is broken loose inside and the battery needs replacing. Good Luck, Ned

How do I change the alternator in my vw polo p reg 97 1.4 petrol car.

Alternator belt routing — all except VR6, with power steering, no A/C

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Disconnect the wiring from the alternator. If necessary, mark the wires with tape or other means to ensure they are connected properly upon installation.
  3. Loosen the belt tension, and remove the drive belt from the alternator. On VR6 (AAA) engines only, remove the belt tensioner from the cylinder head.
  4. Remove the alternator adjustment bolt, followed by the pivot bolts.
  5. Carefully lift the alternator from the bracket. To install:
  6. Hold the alternator in position on the mounting bracket, and install the pivot bolt. On later engines with automatic belt tensioners, install the upper mounting bolt.
  7. Install (but do not tighten) the alternator adjustment bolt (earlier models only).
  8. Place the alternator drive belt on the pulley.
  9. Adjust belt tension and tighten the mounting and adjustment bolts as necessary.
  10. Connect the wiring to the alternator. If tape was used to identify the wires, make sure it is removed once the wires are connected.
  11. Connect the negative battery cable.
