1986 Toyota 4wd transmission problem

Transmission has trouble going into gears both while driving and at start from stop. Transmission is not slipping. If clutch pedal is pressed 2 or 3 times I can get the gears. Reverse is the worst to get into while stopped.

Fluid level is about half full.
Wanted to add that clutch grabs at the floor.

Can a bad or worn pressure plate cause this problem?

  • thetycoman Jan 11, 2009

I don't see the slave cylinder leaking, and appears to have good movement to the fork.

I don't think so.If it's not slipping then i can't see it being the pressure plate. The only thing that i can think of it being is the clutch fluid is low.It is a hydralic clutch right?Cause if it is a cable clutch then you could adjust it

Vibration in transmission

I do not know if this vehicle has a torque converter lockup or not, but sounds like it. Does the transmission stop shaking when you go over 65? Some vehicles have a torque converter lockup, which means when the vehicle is traveling at a certain speed in high gear the torque converter "locks" and there is no slippage to the transmission resulting in better fuel economy. if the torque converter doesn't "unlock" when you slow down to say 45 then the engine will "lug" causing vibration. If this is the case you are not hurting anything by driving, just shift to 3 when it shakes then upshift under lighter load, or take it to a shop that replaces transmission sensors.

How does the 4wd work

if the car has 4wd and considering the age it should have a lever sort of like the one for your transmission gears. you would have 2 low on top, then 2 high. then N for neutral, then 4 low and 4 high at the bottom. but you must turn your hubs which i believe are manual in that truck so you must get out of the truck and manually turn them to the "lock" position. you cannot throw in your 4wd while driving even if your hubs are turned. it will damage your transmission. park it change it then go and idt it will let you go but so fast. i think below 60mph

Usually when a manual shift transmission starts jumping out of gear it's because the synchronizers are worn. The transmission will more than likely have to be repaired and or rebulit by a reputable transmission shop.

I've seen a similar issue on other transmissions where the shifter slips out of the slots in the shift forks, either due to shifter bushing wear or just general wear on tte trans. It can usually be remedied at least temporarily by popping the shifter top off the trans and resetting the forks all back to nuetral and then reinserting the shifter. It gets jammed when two forks are trying to engage two different gear sets.
On one of the 4x4 sites, they tell you how to replace the shifter bushings, cheap fix if you are lucky.
Good luck.

Starting problem

Check the starter solenoid. If it is a manual transmission, try catching it in gear. If it starts and runs, then the problem is probably the starter solenoid. You can buy a rebuild kit at parts america.com for cheap.
