Question about 2003 Ford Escape

Vehicle won't start

Just left ford after a service (needs new power steering pump) told ok to drive, just keep levels up till part arrives. Started suv, drove back to work, backed in and turned off vehicle. When I left work 5 hours later, put key in, everything lit up like normal when I turned the key, but no sound, no ignition, nothing happened. My 2003 escape limited was in because I had a power steering leak and they said they have to order the pump, but the mechamics did clean the engine up, it looks clean and new under the hood. I take care of my suv and I service regular, I only have 28235km on her. Never had a starting issue ever before. Thanks for your help. Fort St. John, BC

Sounds like they shorted out. or got water in the ign. coils These individual coils are very tempermental on these models. Dialectric grease helps on all connectors but doesnt always prevent moisture shorting out electrical parts.

Ford 1993 Taurus steering


Have you checked the power steering fluid level? The reservoir for the fluid will be at the front of the engine, where the belt runs the power steering pump. If it's low or out add a little power steering fluid till full, then start car and slowly turn wheels back and forth from stop to stop-not too ******* the stops (when the steering won't turn further that way...that's what I mean by stops)....Turn wheel one way full travel, then reverse and turn the other way. Check the fluid level again, and add as needed.
If fluid is not low, the belt may be too loose to make the power steering pump work, or you may have a bigger problem that needs professional attewntion.

2007 bmw 530XI wagon. 44K miles. turning wheels once the vehicle is started produces very loud and annoying hum. My assumption is the power steering pump, but unsure if it's related to a slight...


it s acceptable in full lock to lock turns to hear the humming with normal wight steering
and it is acceptable to drive the car without any power steering assist until have it fixed don`t be worry keep an eye on steering fluid

While driving 1989 Hyundai Excel (carburator), the steering began to behave erratic. Steering wheel became harder to turn left/right the longer it was driven. * Checked brand new front tyres at closest...


Sound like you may need a new power steering pump or rack and pinion. Have you noticed any leaks from the vehicle? If you've had the vehicle for 21yrs, then I would have to go with the power steering pump is begining to fail. Hope this helps.

Hello My 1996 discoverys steering is very very stiff especially when turning right. This problem dissappears soon after the vehicle starts to move. The problem started two days ago. steering fluid level...


hi.
if the fluid level is ok, then there is probably not a leak in the system.
check the tyre pressures are correct as underinflated tyres can make the steering heavy, as well as increasing tyre wear.
if the tyre pressures and fluid levels are ok then check the belt driving the power steering pump is ok.
other problems include a bad power steering pump. a faulty rack, or siezed joints on the struts.

Power steering pump replaced, start to work ok, after 10 milles driving, steering wheel is hard, like pump is not working, under hood everything look ok.

My power stering is not working ok i have replace the power stering pump and i have check the sector and it is ok the car work well when it is runing but when i stop it turn hard i have check if it is air...


Power Steering Fluid Filling & Bleeding
  1. Repair the power steering system.
  2. Turn the engine OFF.
  3. Raise the vehicle so the front wheels are off the ground.
  4. Turn the steering wheel all the way to the left.
  5. Fill the power steering fluid reservoir to the FULL/COLD level and leave the cap off.
  6. Have an assistant watch the fluid in the reservoir while you turn the steering wheel fully to the right and fully to the left at least 20 times. NOTE: On systems with long return lines or fluid coolers, turn the steering wheel from lock to lock at least 40 times.
  7. Add fluid as needed to keep the fluid level at the FULL/COLD level.
  8. Install the reservoir cap and start the engine.
  9. Center the front wheels and lower the vehicle.
  10. Run the engine for about 2 minutes.
  11. Turn the steering wheel in both directions and verify correct power steering operation.

Changeing a power steering pump


CHANGING POWER STEERING PUMP YOU HAVE TO PLACE A DRAIN PAN UNDER THE VECHICLE. SIPHON OUT POWER STEERING FLUID WITH A SIPHONER DONT USE YOUR MOUTH TO SIPHON SWALLOWING POWER STEERING FLUID CAN BE FATAL MAKE YOU SICK.WHEN ALL POWER STEERING FLUID IS REMOVED FROM POWER STEERING PUMP.REMOVE DRIVE BELT.THEN REMOVE THE POWER STEERING PUMP.THEN YOU HAVE TO REMOVE THE POWER STEERING PUMP PULLEY THE NEW POWER STEERING PUMP DONT HAVE A PULLEY YOU HAVE TO HAVE REMOVE PULLEY FROM THE OLD POWER STEERING PUMP.YOU NEED A PUMP PULLEY REMOVER AND A PULLEY INSTALLER.YOU CAN TAKE OLD POWER STEERING PUMP AND NEW POWER STEERING PUMP TO A MACHINE SHOP.THEY WILL REMOVE PULLEY OFF OLD PUMP PRESS IT ON NEW POWER STEERING PUMP.THAT WOULD BE CHEAPER THAN BUYING THE PULLER AND INSTALLER.GO TO AUTO PARTS STORE BUY NEW HIGH PRESSURE LINE O RING GOES TO PRESSURE LINE GOING INTO POWER STEERING PUMP.ONCE YOU GET NEW PUMP READY PULLEY BEEN PRESSED ON.TAKE POWER STEERING PUMP HOME PUT IT ON. BLEED POWER STEERING SYSTEM.WHAT YOU DO WHEN YOU GET NEW PUMP INSTALLED HIGH PRESSURE LINE IN PLACE.PUMP BOLTED IN DRIVE BELT ON POUR POWER STEERING FLUID IN POWER STEERING PUMP UNTIL FLUID LEVEL STOP DROPPING AND YOUR LEVEL ON POWER STEERING DIP STICK AT COLD LEVEL.NOW START CAR UP LET IT IDLE FOR 3 MINUTES.THEN TURN OFF ENGINE CHECK POWER STEERING FLUID IF FLUID LEVEL DROP ADD LITTLE MORE UNTIL LEVEL ON DIP STICK ON COLD MARK DONT OVER FILL.NOW SAFELY RAISE SUPPORT FRONT OF VECHICLE. Need to replace power steering pump. whats the step by step way to remove and reinstall


Remove the accessory drive belt from the pump
Remove the pressure hose from the pump
Remove the return hose from the pump
  • Remove the bolts from the pump.
  • Remove the power steering pump from the vehicle.
  • Remove the power steering pump pulley from the pump
  • Remove the reservoir from the pump

  • Install the pump to the vehicle.
  • Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
  • Install the power steering pump bolts.
  • Tighten
    Tighten the power steering pump bolts to 34 N·m (25 lb ft).
    Install the return hose to the pump.
    Then just reverse what you did to remove.
    Once you have it al back together fill the resevoir.
    Do not over fill
  • Start the engine. Rotate steering wheel from left to right. Check for sign of cavitation or fluid aeration (pump noise/whining).
  • Verify the fluid level. Repeat the bleed procedure if necessary

    Routinely, you just jack the vehicle enough to have the tires clear the ground and with the engine on, turn full left till it bottoms out....then turn full right till you bottom it out and then repeat up to ten times.....

    Make sure the fluid level is OK, if reservoir MT ad, with out the cap till air comes out and fluid gets in to system, turn the steering right to left wile You add fluid with cap off, till fluid is not longer going down and reservoir inside gets quiet, when fluid level is OK, put cap back and try it, if system did not recovered normality and loud noise comes from the pump, pump needs replacing, if steering is steel hard, no noise comes from pump, look a steering box or steering arms, if truck has Rakenpinon, look for broken boots, pit man arm
