Problem for Chevrolet 1997 Astro

2000 astro van shift indicator not functioning

just recently,I was waiting for someone with my van in park and on,then a sound like gears grinding started,I put it in reverse and it stopped,put it in neutral and it happened again,,,also the indicator goes on and off in drive park and neutral,please help.
