I have a potential client telling me that her 1997 ford escort has 2 not 1 but 2 timing belts. I have never heard of such a thing.

Hi, my name is Shaun. I'll try to help you out with your problem. As far as i know, the 1997 Escort was only available with the 2.0 SOHC engine ( in the USA, that is.) But even if it is DOHC, it would still have only one timing belt. Maybe you're client assumed since it's a DOHC it would have two timing belts or maybe they are confusing the serpentine belts for timing belts? Either way, you will only be dealing with ONE belt. hope this helps out. Have a great day!

How to tighten up my timing belt on 1989 Ford Escort LX? because it make's a sqeaking noise.

Timing belts don't squeak unless they are worn out or one of the belts idler pulleys is bad or the tensioner is bad. You never adjust the timing belt unless it is new. PERIOD.

After replacing a timing belt and componets, how do I set the timing on a 1997 Ford Escort LX with a 2.0L single overhead cam, std emission engine with A/C and a 5 speed manual transmission?

If you mean valve timing (there is no adjustment for ignition timing), see diagram below from Make sure belt is tight on the right side with gears in these positions:

Fig. Fig. 11: The timing marks on both the camshaft and crankshaft pulleys must be aligned like this before removing or installing the timing belt-2.0L SOHC engines ea0a8b0.gif

I need the engine timing and the crank pulley torque specs.

Once you align the top and bottom timing marks, and install the belt and tight the belt tensioner, you are done, there is no distributor to adjust ignition timing, it is computer controlled. The torque for the crankshaft bolt is 80 foot pounds. Hope this helps, let me know.

Do timing belts in 1994 Ford Escorts ever need replacing?

No they are not. The reason your manual does not saying anything about replacing the timing belt is because 9 times out of 10 most people do not know how to replace the timing belt and make sure that it is on properly and the timing is correct. Also the time belt should be changed around 115,000 miles. But it is never bad to go ahead and get it done if they already did it or are going to

Escort timing belts - excessive wear

The idlers wear out too. If you or your mechanic haven't replaced the idlers, the belt will creep to one side and shred prematurely.

Another possible cause could be the tensioner is not set correctly. It's easy to misread the instructions and get it wrong.

Broken timing belt

its better to get a mechanic to do it then do it your self, if you do it yoursel u will have many more problems for the incorrect timing. find a low cost effective dealer and you will find that cheaper and quicker then doing it yourself.
