Tachometer and speedometer show higher readout than they should. Tachometer failed first, followed by speedometer within a few weeks. Problem is intermittent. Sometimes one or both work fine.

This is caused by a failure of the little circuit board that moves the tach needle, u can have this repaired by any GM authorized repair center,( this is not at the dealer) ask the dealer for a name and number, they are also availiable on the internet.

I have an 2003 Chevy avalanche. My problem is that when I drive the alternator is fine, but when I stop with truck running, the tach shows it going below the normal 550at idle.

increase the idle to above 700. what is the problem with the alternator
Alternators generate power to run the system and charge the battery while a tachometer reads the engine rpm from coil or ignition pulses

How do you hook up tachometer to adjust idle speed

Use a optical tachometer on RPM. Mark the camshaft with white paint or a optical sticker and shine the meter on the mark. Or connect a CT clamp to one on the spark plug leads and take the reading.

While driving my tachometer doesnt go straight to 0 when i stop. It stays around 3/4 close to 1. Is this a concern? 2001 acura cl type s

Hi Eveerei, If you're asking about the tachometer and not the speedo meter, that meter records the engine RPM speed and not the vehicle ground speed The tachometer at idle (when you stop at a traffic light, stop street or any other stop) should record an engine speed of about seven hundred to seven fifty revolutions per minute, at idle. It will increase in relationship to how hard you push your foot on the accelerator pedal. Hope this info helps you. Happy new year and regards John

Need to find rpm fuse

What do you mean by RPM fuse? There is no individual fuse for the Tachometer. If you have a Tach that is not working, the most probable cause is a bad stepper motor in the instrument cluster.

Car revs higher than normal at about 30mph even though in top gear and tachometer doesn't show abnormally high reading.

You may have a defective tachometer gauge stepper motor, making the tachometer show incorrect RPMs.

My 2003 GMC Envoy tachometer is reading 5-7000 rpm at idle and sweeps off the scale when driving.

I see this a lot on the 03-06 Envoy instrument clusters, it's caused by failing stepper motors on the cluster's circuit board. It can be fixed though, check out this page about how to get it fixed - Envoy tachometer not working
