Question about 2000 GMC Jimmy

1 Answer

2000 GMC Jimmy won't start

When the key is in the on position battery light and check engine light are on; when the key is turned to the start all lights come on as they should and then go out except the battey and check engine lights. Also I cannot get the truck out of park. I thought it may be the ignition switch. Any ideas?

Hi: Have run into same type of problem, turned out to be a dead or very battery. Has nothing to do with the ignitin switch. With a low battery have also had trouble getting the key out of a 95 Jimmy. Boost unit to get running then discommect battery, if unit stall right away replace alternator, if stays running replace battery. If you get the unit runnimg and try to drive it as is you should find lacks power and wants to stall.

I think someone tampered with my 2000 gmc Jimmy to keep me from driving does anyone have a clue to what they think may have been tampered with to keep it from fireing

There are a lot of thing's someone could do to make it not start , but they would need access to under hood or inside your vehicle ! don't you lock your Jimmy ?
Does the engine turn over , I mean when you turn the key to the start position does anything happen ? Some people just don't know what I mean when I say this ! Engine cranks no start or no crank -no start ! Are there any lights lit on the instrument cluster , SECURITY ? this will keep it from starting ! Does it have spark at the spark plugs ? Spray some carburetor cleaner into the engine to see if it tries to start !

May be you vehicle won't start because of lack of maintenance ! How many miles does it have on it ? Do you change oil regularly ,spark plugs etc...

Cant remove key

Try the reset for the key switch , hook up battery charger or maintainer to battery then turn key on do not crank engine leave key in on position for ten minutes , repeat a total of three times then turn key switch to off position after third cycle then remove key . Then reinstall key to ignition switch then crank the engine over and see if that fixes your issue .

If you have a spare key thats not worn to bad try it.Sounds like the ignition lock cylinder is worn out.

I have a 1998 GMC Jimmy. Cranks, but won`t start. Fuel is full. Engine stopped while driving. Battery light came on. Any suggestions?

the battery indicator light usually comes on after a lose of power. Sounds to me like either bad gas, clogged fuel filter or a bad fuel pump. Easiest way to check this is have someone turn the key while you stand at rear side of vehicle and listen for the whinning noise a functioning fuel pump makes as it pressurizes the system.

P.S you dont have to start vehicle to check pump. only requires turning the key to the on position. Good Luck

Changed the key ignition in my 2000 gmc jimmy and now the battery light and odometer milage light stays on and drains the battery This all happenens when the truck is turned off. When the truck is running...

The ignition switch(this is the electrical portion) is out of time. It needs to be removed, reindexed(notched teeth on top of switch-rotated a couple spots) and reinstalled. When it is installed correctly, the tell tale lights will not be on, you'll have accessory and the vehicle will start in the crank position. You don't want any lights on when the key is out of the ignition.

2000 gmc starter not turning when key is turned sound at all... plenty of battery power??

Are all your connections on battery clean and tight and also on starter and does all other lights work? If they do then it could be the ignition switch, if you got another person, take a test light and hold it on the small post on starter while the other person turns key to start position, if it don't light test light its the ignition switch, if it does it could be starter.
