It sounds like the wheel bearings are gone first of all put the car front end on jack stands secure the rear wheels remove the tires take the caliper off remove the cup and carter pin and take the rotor off and pry the ring around the back side out and remove the bearing and this should solve the problem also while you have the car up check the lower ball joints also

When I turn the steering wheel, my car does not automatically respond. I have to keep turning the wheel until I feel it catch and turn the car.

Hi

Sounds rather dangerous! 2 things it could be the most likely is the steering rack has either failed completely or the power steering pump is manfunctioning, also check the fluid.

the other thing it could be is track rod ends they would have to be in severely bad condition to cause this though. Get the stering rack checked for leaks or damage as the steering could lock up at any time while you are driving and you know what can happen after that.

Hope that helps.

Dan

1996 lincoln town car cartier makes a steady groaning noise seems as if it comes from front of engine. Occurs continuously and then at times, not at all.

If it seems to get louder when you turn the steering wheel then check your power steering fluid level. If determined this is the cause of groaning sound but fluid level is right then you will need to bleed the air or the pump is going bad. Beyond that I need more info for further help.

Transmission 1994 lincoln towncar- 89000 miles

I would not conclude you have a trans problem,as some other issue maybe be confusing the shift stratagy.
The temperature issues and time driven are the key here.
I would check for stored codes first.
Then go over the basics-Spark Plugs,Ignition,Egr Valve,Vacuum Leaks,MAF Sensor and so forth.
Clean up the engine driveablity issues first.

Becareful when considering changing the trans fluid. That will not fix anything and may cause it to slip more,if you get to that point in your testing

The time parked is not a concern ,as I feel these issues where there before.
If the engine is not running correctly ,you will get just what you discribed, with the shifting up and down

My 2001 astro lost it's brakes and power steering at the same time. any ideas?

check the power steering pump to see if the shaft broke. remove the belt and pull the pulley on the pump, it should not pull out of the pump. If it does you need a new pump
