I always start off by purchasing a repair manual for the specific vehicle. You should be able to pick one up at your local auto parts store or by using one of the following links.

http://www.haynes.com/products/?searchType=vehicleApplicationSearch2&searchEnd=yes&sfID1=&sfID2=&sfID3=&year=1999&make=Ford&model=Explorer&x=18&y=12

http://www.delmarlearning.com/browse_product_detail.aspx?catid=11989&isbn=0801991315&cat1ID=AU&cat2ID=CHM

These manuals provide detailed step-by-step instructions on how to service or repair almost every component of your vehicle.

Hi,
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.
goodluck!

1999 ford explorer - power windows

i have had the problem for 2 years. in between had changed 3 alternators that burned out, 3 GEM units, all relays and all fuses. related or not the electrical kept causing problems and windows were still dead. in the end i very very carefuly checked the first thing that i checked 2 years ago which is the wires from beetween the door and the body as you all mentioned. i did not see it before because the broken wire is buried near the middle of the entire bundle. pls check very very carefuly. if everything else works but not ALL the windows and you replaced the relays and GEM - or hopefuly before - than it is the thick blue wire in your door. i cut the ruber boot out completely to see clearly and there it was. All windows WORK again. good luck

I have a 99 For Explorer. The brake light passenger side doesnt work. Same bulb runs the tail light and turn signal, they work. Replace bulb? Or is it electrical?

I would try replacing the bulb first. That bulb actually has 2 different filaments inside it. One of them may be burned out.

On my 1999 Ford Explorer when you open the drivers side door the interior light does not come on. I had the front door latches replaced about six months ago. Could the problem be with the replaced front...

The lights work the same way as your fridgerator does. There is a push button located on the door or some where around the door frame. This could have been disconnected or damaged.

1999 Ford Explorer Door Locks

Unfortunately, This is a very common problem with Ford Explorers! Ford replaces the locks when it encounters this issue. I managed to unseize my passanger door and tailgate lock, but the drivers door lock is broken beyond repair. You can purchase new remotes for your explorer and program them very easily. Just google ford key fobs...
