Antitheft and battery lite on 2006 ford freestar

Have a freestar vthat wont stay running and both battery and antitheft lites come on and stall vehicle, battery new , please help

    same as above... check on line... its the water leak into the PCM under the hood... google it, you'll see hundreds with the same problem... ford as problem bulletin for it... you can check for that too..

Try your spare key first. also, does the anti theft visual indicator (red flashing light) prove out, that is light for three seconds when key is turned to on.

Principles of Operation
The passive anti-theft system (PATS) uses a specially encoded ignition key. Each encoded ignition key contains a permanently installed electronic device called a transponder. Each transponder contains a unique electronic identification code out of over 18 billion, billion combinations.
The passive anti-theft system (PATS), also known as SecuriLock ®, uses radio frequency identification technology to deter a drive-away theft. This system is known as SecuriLock® in North America, Safeguard® in the U.K., and PATS in continental Europe. Passive means that it does not require any activity from the user.
The SecuriLock® System (PATS) is not compatible with NON-FORD remote start systems, which allow the vehicle to be started from outside the vehicle. These systems may reduce the vehicle security level, and also may cause no-start issues. If equipped, the remote start system must be removed before investigation of PATS-related, no-start issues.
Each encoded ignition key must be programmed into the vehicle's powertrain control module (PCM) before it can be used to start the engine. The correct ignition key is a different design than prior model years. Consult the Rotunda Key Ordering Guide for the correct part number. There are special diagnostic repair procedures described in this section that must be carried out if a new encoded ignition key is necessary.
This system contains a new feature named Unlimited Key Mode. This feature allows a customer to program more than eight keys to the vehicle if they request it. Each vehicle in Unlimited Key Mode is set up with a special unlimited transponder security key. This allows all the customer vehicles to share the same keys, but no other keys from outside can be used to operate the vehicles. For an individual customer, any randomly selected security key is acceptable. Refer to Unlimited Key Mode Programming in Key Programming Switch State Control in this section.
The PATS transceiver module communicates with the encoded ignition key. The module is located behind the steering column shroud and contains an antenna connected to a small electronics module. During each vehicle start sequence, the transceiver module reads the encoded ignition key identification code and sends data to the PCM.
The control functions are contained in the PCM. This module carries out all of the PATS functions, such as receiving the identification code from the encoded ignition key and controlling the engine enable. The PCM initiates the key interrogation sequence when the vehicle ignition switch is turned to RUN or START.
All elements of the PATS must be functional before the engine is allowed to start. If any of the components are not working correctly, the vehicle will not start.
PATS uses a visual theft indicator. The indicator will prove out for three seconds when the ignition switch is turned to RUN or START under normal operation. If there is a PATS concern, this indicator will either flash rapidly or glow steadily when the ignition switch is turned to RUN or START. The PATS system also flashes the theft indicator every two seconds at ignition OFF to act as a visual deterrent.
PATS will be activated and will disable the vehicle from starting if there is:

  • an incorrectly encoded ignition key.
  • a damaged encoded ignition key.
  • an unprogrammed key
  • a non-encoded key (key has no electronics).
  • damaged wiring.
  • a damaged transceiver.
  • a damaged PCM.

Have the alternator checked and check the drive belt for any slipping if you can start the car while it is running take the positive side cable off the battery if it dies then it is the alternator

2005 Ford Freestar, altenator went out, During the process the Brake/ABS dash lights came on, when the battery got low, The transmission shifts fine, working normal.


ok you changed the altenator did you do this yourself ? now take off the battery cables and reconnect them to clear the trouble codes and use your key fob when the alarm sounds to stop it from going into theft mode put the key in the ignition and turn it to the run position do not try to start it yet wait about 3 minutes for the system to get all the voltage parameters back then turn the key off then start the car it may idle rough at first do not apply any gas peddle just let it run after the idle stabilizes drive the vehicle so it can continue to relearn the operating system parameters if the lights come on again take it to auto zone or advance ETC. to get it scanned but I think you should be ok the system works by voltage and being the altenator went bad the systems voltage was way down causing the codes good luck Stephen

I have a 99 cadillac deville it turns over, cranks up but won't stay cranked i replaced the starter and the plugs it still wont stay cranked


Antitheft or Security system failure is a common problem on GM vehicles. Every time you put your key in the ignition, the vehicle's security system reads the signal from your key to make sure it is OK to run. When it receives the "correct key" signal, the security system allows the starter to turn over, and/or the fuel injectors to function and your car works like it normally does every day. If you were to use a different key, or try to hot wire it, the system would shut down these parts of your car, thus making the vehicle completely immobile. This is GM's way of preventing vehicle theft. The problem is that the system is known to fail quite commonly. It has been failing consistently for around 30 years. When it fails, two things can happen. First, you turn the key and nothing happens at all. Lights work, radio works, windows work... just not the starter that you need to start the vehicle. This is a "starter immobilizer". Second, you turn the key and the vehicles starts just fine, but then stalls in 2-5 seconds. This is a "fuel immobilizer". It literally cuts off the fuel injectors and stalls the vehicle to immobilize it. These are normally, but not always followed by a light on the dash that says SECURITY or ANTITHEFT. These lights are to inform you of the system's failure to collect the information it needs from your key to the computer. If your security/antitheft light is on, odds are you will be stranded soon, if not already. Remember that the security system controls the security light. My antitheft light comes on all the time car ticks over but wont start have changed the battery in my car key and it stil dosent work i hav a 207 diesel 1.4


try a new battery in the car if old one is low on power the antitheft device kicks in as thinks its being stolen ,after installing new battery lock an unlock vehicle with the remote and then start as normal

The security, antitheft, or passlock light is a visual indication that something in the car's antitheft system is failing. In most GM cars and trucks there is a hidden system that most people are unaware even exists. From the moment you put your key in the ignition, there begins a constant line of communication between your key's security chip or transponder, to the ignition's lock cylinder, and then to the car's TDM (Theft Deterrent Module). These 3 parts are in CONSTANT communication. If the key is in the ignition, then these parts are sending signals to each other. The security light illuminates when that signal gets broken, even just for a second. When the signal breaks, the car misinterperates this as an attempt at theft and goes into antitheft mode. The car thinks its being stolen or hotwired because it is not getting that signal from YOUR specific key. This is why the security light turns on and shuts down your vehicle.

First check the battery has 12 volts min. better to have above 13 volts.

2003 cts stalling


If the antitheft ligh stays on, the vehicle may start and die. Maybe the system needs to be relearned or there maybe an issue with the transmitter in one of the keys. If you tried to start vehicle with wrong key or a copy that doesn't have the transmitter this would cause the antitheft module to disable the vehicle. For reprogramming the system all keys are needed. Good luck.

My car will not start up and stay running it cuts off after a split second I've been told its my fuel pump went I know I need new plugs do you think that might be it a tune up?


Right after the car stalls, look for a light on the dash that says SECURITY. This is an indicator that you have a failing antitheft system. When the system fails, the car mistakenly thinks it's being stolen, and turns off the injectors in 5 seconds or less, thus stalling the vehicle. Very common problem on GM vehicles. 2001gmc jimmy starts and stalls security light stays on


The security light has one job, it warns you that there is a "break" or "miscommunication" in your antitheft system. This is why the Jimmy keeps stalling. The antitheft system cuts the power to the injectors (It's thinking it is protecting itself from theft) and the vehicles stalls in 5 seconds or less after starting. They are also known to stall while driving. Followed by the security light. The SECURITY light will either flash or stay on solid. A solid light normally indicates a bad Theft Deterrent Module, this is the brain of the whole system. Go to this link, it has alot of info stuff that should help you out.
