1998 Mercury mystique v6 "fuel filler downpipe"

I have a 1998 mercury mystique v6. It was bought used with approx. 140,000 miles on it. Since buying it i have heard all the horror stories about the "mercury mistake" as it is often referred to. Fortunately i got the car cheap, the body is in good shape and the duratec v6 is a jewel. I have been fortunate so far to only have minor problems.
My question is this.---Last year when the car was up on a hoist getting the oil changed the mechanic showed me the "fuel filler down pipe". ( the pipe that goes from the gas cap down to the gas tank). He told me that these cars are known for for having ones that rot prematurely. The one on my car is fairly rough.
---I priced one and was shocked that the part alone cost $400-$450! Is there something i could use instead. Maybe something from a hardware or auto parts store that would work and not cause any problems such as filling problems ect. If anyone out there knows a solution that will work it would be much appreciated!
Thanks..............

Fuel Tank Filler Pipe
The fuel tank filler pipe is of steel construction and is retained to the vehicle by means of two lower retaining bolts and one upper retaining bolt. The fuel tank filler pipe is fitted with a twist-fit filler cap, which seals the system.

I would not replace it unless there was a reason.

Check EBay or tascaford.com if you really want to replace it.

You can try a salvage yard that has a computer that will let you know of other cars that will interchange with yours and they may have one used that will work, but you should also be able to go to auto zone or napa and get a rubber tubing that can be high pressure fuse hose that will work on your car alot cheaper then $450.00

You could probably use a radiator hose to replace it

What type of fuel line do I use from the (fpr) to the metal fuel line that come from the gas tank. On a 2000 mercury mystique v6 2.5L

I would only sugest using replacement line no substitute. They are as expensive as some may think and will save u a lot of time, not to mention safety first.

Just bought a fuel regulator for my mercury mystique v6, bought a haynes repair manual, followed it but the fuel regulaor is not where it says it is, any ideas?

How many fuel lines are going to the fuel rail? If there is only one line that you have a later model 2000 and the system is considered return less. This means that the fuel pressure is regulated at the fuel pump before the fuel gets to the fuel rail. If there are two lines going to the fuel rail than the fuel pressure regulator has to be in between one of those lines and the fuel rail

Do you need to replace the timing belt when you change a water pump for a 1998 mercury mystique v6?

You don't have to replace it but you have to take the belt off to remove the water pump for the extra $30.00 i would recomend changing the belt too, unless the belt has been changed less then 20,000 miles ago .
