I would check to be sure you do not have an internal short with in the alternator or accessory relay.

01 cavalier 2.2 Have had no problems at all. Turned it off and when I went to start it 1/2 hour later it wouldn't even turn over.

Check the connection from the battery cable to the starter. Might need cleaning. Solenoid may not be kicking in. Is the whirr only when the key is in the start position?

Car was running, parked it on slight grade, went to start will not turn over,

First, will engine turn over..If not check battery ground, make sure you got a good ground, then check to see if power is going to lights, dome light and dash lights...If not battery could be bad, if battery is OK then check starter...let me know what you find.....

2002 cavalier was running fine then just died. Will start but wont stay running. Fuel pump?

12.72 is what some new batteries have for a week or so
Little high
Only you know how old the battery is,4 years & it may
be bad, happens,& the voltage can go up when bad, oddly

If your into the fuel pump thing, put a pressure gauge on it
Don't guess. Can't hear pressure build.

I would check the key switch first to make sure all circuits have power with the key on.
There is a fuse for the cluster too.

Cavalier 2005: When headlights are on; heater stops, dash lights go very very dimm and turn signal does not work and ipod ( hooked up to sig.lighter ) stops working....What could be the cause ? Thanks.

Alternator may be bad, causing battery to lose voltage. I think you should have the starting/charging system checked, and replace the battery and alternator as required by the testing. I wouldn't drive it until this problem is fixed, as the car can shut down when the voltage gets too low, working off of the battery. Check whether the charge light is lit when the car is running. If it is, there is a self detected problem with the alternator. If not, there could still be a voltage charge problem, that hasn't been self detected, perhaps a diode is bad or voltage regulator is faulty, causing the alternator to barely put out enough power to keep the car running.

Fuel gauge needle way past full, holding temp needle down so I cannot read temp either! 2005 with no low beams. Could problem be related?

Most likely this is the common 03-05 Cavalier instrument cluster problem where the stepper motors on the cluster's circuit board go out. It can be fixed, check this page for more on how to get it taken care of - Cavalier fuel gauge broken
