I have the same problem with my 2.0 gas 2002 Golf. I changed the thermostat and that cleared up the problem for awhile but it now appears to be returning as the Temperature Gaage has started to drop to zero and bounce back until the engine comes up to normal operating temp.

I had the same problem or more so that my temp would run cold for miles and miles then go to normal and drop. It was my glow plugs. They needed to be changed. My boyfriend changed them himself in 10 minutes after I had been quoted 2 HOURS for labour!!

02 tdi my water gauge goes up then down then up to normal do you think its my water pump

It is most likely the thermostat, radiator clog or the temp sensor for the gauge. Usually, if the water pump is the cause, it will not cool down at all.

I have a 2002 VW Jetta and the temperature gauge keeps going up and down... Is this something to worry about ?

Replace the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor. ECT sensor is placed in the right back side of the cylinder head on 2002 VW Jetta 1.9 TDI. See picture below:

The thermostat may be wearing out. A thermostat controls the engine temperature to keep it at a consistent temperature, The other fan will probably turn on if you turn on your Air Conditioner.

VW Golf TDI enjin power loss and shudder at certain temperature

I think i would be inclined to look at the coil pack ,and the wiring for this where it comes from the ECU ,i have never come across this before but its possible if the ECU isnt passing the correct information to the coil pack to fire in the right order ,what about the crank position sensor wiring are they shorting somewhere ?' Have a good look at the wiring and if necessary take the black outer sheafing off to inspect the wires inside

Tempreture gauge drops to cold and car stops

Sounds like faulty engine temp sensor. When it drops to cold, the engine control unit picks this up and alters the fuel mixture accordingly. The ECU will be making it a very rich fuel mixture for cold starting, hence very poor running when engine is hot.

Jetta 2003 TDI

My mechanic in our town did a quick computer check. Car computer indicated a low level of antifreeze, he topped it up, cleared all messages off the car computer and said to watch the the heat guage for any further irregularities. I'll keep an eye on it, love the car, great mileage fun to drive.
