Question about 1990 Nissan Pulsar

Hi there mi car keps bringin up the engin check light 4 abot 2 seconds as the car is warming up and yet the car runs good as n dosent cut out..there is heaps of oil in it and iv all ready been through n cleand n checkd all da wireing plugs unda the bonnet..were do i go next or wal is da problem? any help wuld be realy good thank u

On a Nissan of your vintage I believe that a blinking check engine light means that the computer has a code stored in it. However if the light isn't on steady it means that nothing is wrong at that time. Try disconnecting the battery for about 60 seconds and see if it stops. If it doesen't then you may need to see a mechanic unless you feel comfortable trying to repair it your self. If so check a site called Alldata. They will give you all the same info the dealer has.

1998 Suzuki Esteem ran out of gas. Still won't start after putting in gas. Is there a way to prime it.

or doing the Test fuel procedures?
is this a barn find/ field found car, or it ran perfect last week, and DD for months. (daily driver?) all this maters and is unstated.
1.6L or 1.8L engine, G16 or J18 suzuki enignes? major different they are.
with old engines, we do this and win every time.

all FUSES good, (EFI and spark fuses up to 3 or more)

1: compression test, sparks out , wide open throttle. warm to hot engine.
180psi on all,, good, if like 90, the timing belt slipped. if J18. we have
3 folks now on our forum that managed to slip a chain (they ingored huge noises from engine,,,, amazing)
2: spark got good on all 4 cylinders. and timed right not guessed at
using a real tool called a timing light for 20 bucks.
3: with fuel pump relay pulled i test engine on test fuel.
runs for 3 seconds, each spray and SOUNDS good.
ok it does that.. (this avoids flooding issues)
4: i put back the fuel pump relay.
and it dont start. i check for injection,
i find all injectors, dead.
the ECU is cutting injection,
i connect scan tool and see the CKP DTC errors , the CKP is dead
or CMP on G16. dead. the ECU reports them cranking only, on a dead engine.
the ECU will cut fuel if it seen spark dead.
the ECU will cut fuel if the TPS sensors signals wide open throttle cranking
i checked all that and its good.
i find fuel pressure a 0 , cranking, (one more cheap tool)
i find 12vdc good to pump cranking (a 10 buck meter at walfart)
the pump is bad. no the wires are corroded. at the pump line....
super common on old cars.

this is 1 example path of 100s.

No power going to the fuel pump


first check all fuses.
well if the security lamp is on, and the IMMobilizer light glows
it will never run. (by design) (2 seconds max)
so are the lights glowing?
no power going. (when,)
did you read the FSM on the staged events to get engine started.
my wild guess? (sad i have to ask) is it wont start?
1: IMMO not active
2: battery charged volts near 12.6vdc rested.
3: starter cranks fast. and ASD closes
4: ASD relay sees good spark and CKP, and CMP sensors.
5: engine starts, if #4 is good then it sustains running.
if not ASD drops out in 2 seconds. killing INJECTION.
it cuts the fuel pump too.

the PCM will throw a DTC error code (did you scan it cranking ??)
for if the ASD fails to OUTPUT 12v. at step 3.

the PCM closes it, then looks, and if output is bad, it ends this event and logs the failure..

to check the pump , it takes 2 people
one at the key, and one at the pump wires.
or you WILL miss the 2second event.

one way to avoid all that is to hold finger on the ASD relay
and keyon and see if it clicks closed.
if not ., no need to check pump ,its LAST in the chain,
if the ASD clicks and drops out, during that click the pump does run
for 2 seconds, min.,
if the ASD is dead, check the PCM control line to the ASD for
making coil energized in the ASD relay, (12vdc across it for 2seconds)
if the coil is energized, and the DTC throws, for bad ASD , it is.
if the ASD goes, hot only for 2 seconds, again use any $9
scan tool to see the error.
here is the scan too tests. most books forget.
1: scan tool connected.
2; Crank engine for 5 seconds, (min)
3: release key. BINGO, the ECU tells you why the ASD dropped out.
eg: ASD error, CMP error, CKP errors or others (spark?)
does RPM read near 250rpm cranking? on the scan tool?
Is TPS throttle angle near 100% (cutting fuel) ? bad tps. (cut wires)


fixing cars without a $9 scan tool , as sold on feabay is 100x harder.
get the tool and use it.
they rent them cheap or loan them for free.
not to be confused with a code reader, which are near useless.
imo.....

I have a 1994 Firebird 3.4 that runs rough intermittently when warm.


I can't imagine anything being affected by changing the oil other than the valves in the heads. I assume you have good oil pressure hot or cold. I suppose you could be moving a wiring harness around when you take the oil filter off.
It would depend on if the rough running is mechanical or fuel or ignition related to say what to check first. I would have to figure out which area is affected first.
Something like a sensor or a dead miss on one cylinder could turn the check engine light on, but most fuel and mechanical issues will not do it on a car of that year.
If one of the coils was failing when the engine is hot, changing the oil should have no effect.

My 1996 evo 4 did have over boost got that


r u getting right fuel presure, mine used to keep cutting out after giving it a bit hard throttle ,like it was running on 3 and some times cut right out and the fuel pump when warm was loosing pressure

Fan dosent work also the temperature gage


Sounds to me that the temp sending unit needs to be checked or replaced, bad sending unit can cause a multitude of problems.... ie Fan not running, Engine running rough, Try checking for voltage at the sending unit with the ignition on but not running. Possibly bad sending unit.. Unit is usually located near the radiator hose that goes into the engine. usually round nut with either 1 or up to as many as 3 or 4 wires coming out of it Check the voltages there.. If you dont have power going in and nothing going out when the engine is warmed its bad.,...

Temp guage barely moves and runs rough just off idle


Try a full tune up.. get Bosch platnium+4 spark plugs and Acel wires, do the fuel filter and air filter(i suggest K&N) buy some fuel injector cleaner or use Marvel Mystery oil. The ECU could e gone but hard to diagnose if the car needs a tune up.

Since this is an intermittent problem, first try to determine if the problem arises due to one of these many intermittent problems:

* Vehicle vibration
* Heat sensitive
* Freezing
* Water intrusion
* Electrical load
* Cold or hot start up

If you can't isolate the cause of the intermittent problem, you can try adjusting the Idle Speed/Ignition Timing/Idle Mixture Ratio:

PREPARATION
1) Make sure that the following parts are in good order.

* Battery
* Ignition system
* Engine oil and coolant levels
* Fuses
* ECM harness connector
* Vacuum hoses
* Air intake system
* (Oil filler cap, oil level gauge, etc.)
* Fuel pressure
* Engine compression
* EGR valve operation (If so equipped)
* Throttle valve
* Evaporative emission system

2) On air conditioner equipped models, checks should be carried out while the air conditioner is OFF.
3) On automatic transmission equipped models, when checking idle rpm, ignition timing and mixture ratio,
checks should be carried out while shift lever is in “N” position.
4) When measuring “CO” percentage, insert probe more than 40 cm (15.7 in) into tail pipe.
5) Turn off headlamps, heater blower, rear defogger.
6) Keep front wheels pointed straight ahead.
7) Make the check after the cooling fan has stopped.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE

1 INSPECTION START
1. Visually check the following:
I Air cleaner clogging
I Hoses and ducts for leaks
I EGR valve operation (If so equipped)
I Electrical connectors
I Gasket
I Throttle valve and throttle position sensor operation
2. Start engine and warm it up until engine coolant temperature indicator points to the middle of gauge.
Ensure engine stays below 1,000 rpm.
3. Open engine hood and run engine at about 2,000 rpm for about 2 minutes under no-load.
4. Perform diagnostic test mode II (Self-diagnostic results).
OK or NG
OK ' GO TO 2.
NG ' 1. Repair or replace components as necessary.
2. GO TO 2.

2 CHECK IGNITION TIMING
1. Run engine at about 2,000 rpm for about 2 minutes under no-load.
2. Rev engine (2,000 to 3,000 rpm) two or three times under no-load, then run engine at idle speed.
3. Turn off engine and disconnect throttle position sensor harness connector.
4. Start and rev engine (2,000 - 3,000 rpm) two or three times under no-load, then run at idle speed.
5. Check ignition timing with a timing light.
15°±2° BTDC (in “P” or “N” position)
OK or NG
OK ' GO TO 4.
NG ' GO TO 3.

3 ADJUST IGNITION TIMING
1. Adjust ignition timing by turning distributor after loosening securing bolts.
2. Turn off engine and connect throttle position sensor harness connector to throttle position sensor.
' GO TO 2.


4 CHECK BASE IDLE SPEED
1. Check idle speed.
700±50 rpm (in “P” or “N” position)
OK or NG
OK ' GO TO 6.
NG ' GO TO 5.

5 ADJUST BASE IDLE SPEED
1. Rev engine (2,000 to 3,000 rpm) 2 or 3 times under no-load then run engine at idle speed.
2. Adjust idle speed by turning idle speed adjusting screw.
700±50 rpm (in “P” or “N” position)
' GO TO 6.

6 CHECK TARGET IDLE SPEED
1. Turn off engine and connect throttle position sensor harness connector.
2. Start and rev engine (2,000 to 3,000 rpm) 2 or 3 times under no-load then run at idle speed.
3. Check idle speed.
750±50 rpm (in “P” or “N” position)
OK or NG
OK ' GO TO 9.
NG ' GO TO 7.

7 DETECT MALFUNCTIONING PART
Check the following.
1. Check IACV-AAC valve and replace if necessary.
2. Check IACV-AAC valve harness and repair if necessary.
3. Check ECM function by substituting another known good ECM.
(ECM may be the cause of a problem, but this is rarely the case.)
' GO TO 9.

9 CHECK FRONT HEATED OXYGEN SENSOR LH SIGNAL
1. Run engine at about 2,000 rpm for about 2 minutes under no-load.
2. Set “Left bank front heated oxygen sensor monitor” in the Diagnostic Test Mode II.
3. Make sure that MIL goes on more than 5 times during 10 seconds at 2,000 rpm.
OK or NG
OK ' GO TO 12.
NG (MIL does not blink.) ' GO TO 17.
NG (MIL blinks less than 5 times.)
' 1. Replace front heated oxygen sensor LH.
2. GO TO 10.


10 CHECK FRONT HEATED OXYGEN SENSOR LH SIGNAL
1. Warm engine to normal operating temperature.
2. Run engine at approx. 2000 rpm for approx. 2 minutes under no-load.
3. Set “Left bank front heated oxygen sensor monitor” in the Diagnostic Test Mode II.
4. Make sure that MIL goes on more than 5 times during 10 seconds at 2,000 rpm.
OK or NG
OK ' GO TO 13.
NG ' GO TO 11.

11 DETECT MALFUNCTIONING PART
Check the following.
1. Check fuel pressure regulator.
2. Check mass air flow sensor and its circuit.
3. Check injector and its circuit.
Clean or replace if necessary.
4. Check engine coolant temperature sensor and its circuit.
5. Check ECM function by substituting another known good ECM.
(ECM may be the cause of a problem, but this is rarely the case.)
' GO TO 2.


13 CHECK FRONT HEATED OXYGEN SENSOR RH SIGNAL
1. Set “Right bank front heated oxygen sensor monitor” in the Diagnostic Test Mode II.
2. Make sure that MIL goes on more than 5 times during 10 seconds at 2,000 rpm.
OK or NG
OK ' INSPECTION END
NG (MIL does not blink.) ' GO TO 16.
NG (MIL blinks less than 5 times.)
' 1. Replace front heated oxygen sensor RH.
2. GO TO 14.


14 CHECK FRONT HEATED OXYGEN SENSOR RH SIGNAL
1. Warm engine to normal operating temperature.
2. Run engine at approx. 2000 rpm for approx. 2 minutes under no-load.
3. Set “Right bank front heated oxygen sensor monitor” in the Diagnostic Test Mode II.

16 CHECK FRONT HEATED OXYGEN SENSOR RH HARNESS
1. Turn off engine and disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Disconnect ECM harness connector.
3. Disconnect front heated oxygen sensor RH harness connector.
4. Check harness continuity between ECM terminal 50 and front heated oxygen sensor RH harness connector.
Continuity should exist.
OK or NG
OK ' 1. Connect ECM harness connector.
2. GO TO 18.
NG ' 1. Repair or replace harness.
2. GO TO 9.

17 CHECK FRONT HEATED OXYGEN SENSOR LH HARNESS
1. Turn off engine and disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Disconnect ECM harness connector.
3. Disconnect front heated oxygen sensor LH harness connector.
4. Check harness continuity between ECM terminal 51 and front heated oxygen sensor LH harness connector.
Continuity should exist.
OK or NG
OK ' 1. Connect ECM harness connector.
2. GO TO 18.
NG ' 1. Repair or replace harness.
2. GO TO 9.

18 PREPARATION FOR “CO” % CHECK
1. Disconnect engine coolant temperature sensor harness connector.
2. Connect a resistor (4.4 kW) between terminals of engine coolant temperature sensor harness connector.
' GO TO 19.

19 CHECK “CO” %
1. Start engine and warm it up until engine coolant temperature indicator points to the middle of gauge.
2. Rev engine (2,000 to 3,000 rpm) two or three times under no-load, then run engine at idle speed.
3. Check “CO” %.
Idle CO: 1.5 - 9%
After checking CO%,
a. Disconnect the resistor from terminals of engine coolant temperature sensor.
b. Connect engine coolant temperature sensor harness connector to engine coolant temperature sensor.
OK or NG
OK ' 1. Replace front heated oxygen sensor LH.
2. GO TO 10.
NG ' GO TO 20.

20 DETECT MALFUNCTIONING PART
Check the following.
1. Connect front heated oxygen sensor harness connectors to front heated oxygen sensors.
2. Check fuel pressure regulator.
3. Check mass air flow sensor and its circuit.
4. Check injector and its circuit.
Clean or replace if necessary.
5. Check engine coolant temperature sensor and its circuit.
6. Check ECM function by substituting another known good ECM.
(ECM may be the cause of a problem, but this is rarely the case.)
' GO TO 2.
