This is your dynamic stability control, it controls how the car reacts when cornering etc, if you look under the rear axel you will see an arm and lever connected to a control module this could be the problem. How ever it will not damage your car just be carefull as the car migh not handle as good as it use too

restart the engine and see if it goes out if it does then press the switch near the gearbox to off or check ur sensor

Dsc hydraulic unit failure


I have the same fault , that has just occured out of the blue only 38,000 on clock.
Drives perfectly and brakes fine too.
Warning light indicates Suspension Stability control
but diagnosed as yours at the same cost.
Apparently quite a common fault with series 1 , but BMW do not tell you that !!

DSC fault on display,car stops complete electrical failure.

I suspect this could be your battery at fault.

Get it heavy discharge tested first.
